Hi I'm Kristen

I'm a wife, a genealogist, a writer, a survivor, and an advocate. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am a family history consultant and genealogist because it's like being a detective! I love searching for clues, discovering new information, writing about the stories I find, and sharing them with my extended family. It is interesting to learn about my African-American, German, and Czech heritage. My degree is in international cultural studies, so I love to travel and learn about different cultures, and I try to keep up on my French (that used to be fluent!). I am also a survivor of childhood abuse, and now I get to be an advocate for other women who were also abused as children and offer hope that healing, though difficult, is possible. I love all kinds of music, especially gospel, soul, and R&B.

Why I am a Mormon

In short, I am a Mormon because I prayed and asked God if the things I learned about this religion were true. I attended an open house of one of the temples that had just been constructed, and I felt a peace and love that I had never felt before. I knew I wanted to come back, and I wanted to find out how. I had a friend who was Mormon, and she gave me a copy of the Book of Mormon to read. I also asked her if I could come to church with her. I had been to many different churches, but I had never felt a peace and a feeling of instant friendship and welcome like I did when I attended church with my friend for the first time. I wanted to learn more about this church, so I asked the missionaries if I could meet with them. The missionaries taught me that I have a loving Father in heaven who has a plan for me, and that the gospel of Jesus Christ, the same gospel that He taught when He was on the earth, was restored in its fullness in our day. They asked me to read the Book of Mormon, and to pray and ask God if it is true. When I decided that I really wanted to know that the Book of Mormon was true, and when I prayed with humility and asked God with sincerity, I received an answer that it IS in fact scripture. That is when I decided to be baptized, and I have been blessed ever since. Life is not any less challenging, but I have better tools to deal with the challenges that life throws at me. I have a better understanding of God's plan, of the sacrifice Jesus made to enable forgiveness and healing, and of the Holy Ghost who helps with direction and comfort. Becoming a Mormon has opened up my life to blessings that I did not know were possible before, and I am so grateful.

How I live my faith

I do my best to pray and read in the scriptures daily. I find that I gain insights into difficult situations I'm facing, and it helps me to find strength and feel like God is helping me to get through them. I try to serve in whatever capacity I am asked, whether as a Sunday school teacher, a youth teacher, organizing activities, leading the congregation in singing, or directing the choir. I also live my faith by attending the temple, where I find peace and joy that help me in the rest of my life.
