Hi I'm Denis

I'm a Lieutenant in the US Air Force. I'm a project engineer. I grew up in Texas. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am in the United States Air Force and am working on my masters at the Air Force Institution of Technology in Dayton, Ohio. I recently graduated with a BS in Civil & Environmental Engineering. I've been married for almost five years to my amazing wife. I love to be outdoors--swimming, hiking, camping, running...anything! I enjoy music, singing, and learning different instruments. I like to read about religion, history, and politics.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I have found answers that have helped me to know God and my purpose in this life. The scriptures, including the Bible and Book of Mormon, and the teachings of the Church have helped me understand who I am and how I can live with God again. As I live by the teachings that I learn, I feel more peace and happiness.

How I live my faith

I try to live my faith by serving those around me in the community and in my church. I do my best to build a relationship with God through prayer, scripture study, and attending Church each week. These things have helped me to feel the Spirit and keep me on the right path in life!

Why is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Mormons or Mormonism?

Denis
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been nick-named Mormons pretty much since the Church began in 1830. The term "Mormon" was given to those who joined the Church and believed in its unique record of scripture called the Book of Mormon. Mormon was actually an ancient American prophet who helped compile the records that eventually became the Book of Mormon that we use today. Most members of the Church refer to themselves as Latter-day Saints--or LDS, but are usually fine with the term Mormon too. Show more Show less

What is the priesthood?

Denis
The priesthood is the power and authority of God. Since the beginning, God has given this authority to man so that they can act in His name when they perform important ordinances like baptism and marriage. Priesthood holders are also authorized to teach and organize the Church throughout the world. Christ gave the priesthood to his apostles during his earthly ministry. We believe that soon after the apostles' deaths, the priesthood authority to run the Church was no longer on the earth. When Heavenly Father called Joseph Smith to restore the Church, he was given the priesthood authority to do so. Just like only certain government officials are commissioned and authorized to perform certain tasks, only those who have the priesthood are authorized to perform saving ordinances and govern the Church today. Who wrote the Book of Mormon?

Denis
The Book of Mormon, like the Bible, is a record written by many different prophets, not just one person. While the Bible takes place mostly in Israel and the surrounding area, most of the authors/prophets of the Book of Mormon lived in America from about 600 BC to 420 AD. Mormon was one of the later prophets who abridged the records of his people and compiled them onto metal plates so that they would be preserved. These became known as the plates of Mormon. About 1400 years later, the young prophet Joseph Smith was told the whereabouts of this important record and was given the power to translate it into what is now known as the Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ. I know that the Book of Mormon is true and has helped me know my Savior better. Show more Show less
