Hi I'm Bret

I'm a musician. I'm a college professor. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I teach music at a small university in the Southern United States. I play and teach music for a living. My wife and I live in a part of the country where there aren't a lot of Mormons, and we drive an hour each way to go to church. It's worth it.

Why I am a Mormon

There are lots of churches out there, and it can be confusing to decide where to go—or whether it really matters. But the scriptures tell us that the Holy Spirit will guide and direct each of us when we are sincerely seeking the truth. I'm a Mormon—a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—because the Spirit has shown to me that the things taught there are true. Each week when I attend church I experience the peace and joy that are the fruits of the Spirit, and I know that I have made the right choice.

How I live my faith

Following Christ is more than just going to Sunday services. He set an example of giving love and service to everyone He met. I know that when I am serving other people, I am serving Him.

Are there restrictions based on race or color concerning who can join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have the priesthood?

No. Where I live, many Christian churches, although they don't turn people away, are still sort of divided along race or color lines because of many years of tradition. But the Mormon church has a positive reputation here for its "integrated" congregation. Mormons are a colorful bunch, and here in the South, that's literal. Show more Show less

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

The "Word of Wisdom" refers to the Mormon belief in avoiding addictive substances like alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and tea. It also means eating a nutritious diet and otherwise taking care of our bodies. I like to get up a little early and go to my office at the university to practice my music before classes start for the day. Sometimes I see my co-workers or students stumbling in later with their coffee, still trying to wake up enough to teach or learn. I'm grateful that my body doesn't depend on chemicals to get it started in the morning, or to relax or have a good time. Show more Show less

Are Mormons Christians?

Yes! Jesus Christ is at the very center of our beliefs and our teachings. I know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of the world, and that He died and rose from the grave so that I can be with Him someday. Show more Show less
