Hi I'm Bill Harvey

I grew up in Eastern Iowa. I now live in northern Colorado. My family joined the church when I was 10 years old.

About Me

I have been married for 30 years and am the father of five beautiful children. Since we have been married, we have lived in many locations througout the United States and also Tokyo, Japan. Everywhere we have lived we have found new friends through the Church. I find it comforting that the Church is the same throughout the world. Before I was married I served as a missionary in the Bogota', Colombia Mission. At that time the mission covered the eastern half of Colombia. I was privileged to serve in Sincelejo, Barranquilla, Bucaramanga and Bogotá. Since then, the Church has grown so much that the mission has now been split into several missions. I really loved working among the people of Colombia. I found them to be very generous and full of faith. I now work as an automotive engineer. I used to work in the Detroit area developing fuel economy injection components for passenger cars. Now I work with very large diesel engines such as would be found in locomotives or small shipss. I have loved cars since I was a child and am grateful to be able to work doing something that I love. Many times Heavenly Father has blessed me with ideas and with solutions to problems at work. He cares about every aspect of our lives, not just what we do on Sunday.

Why I am a Mormon

I joined the church with my family when I was 10 years old. At that time I believed what the missionaries taught and enjoyed attending church, but joined primarily because of my parents. As time passed, I gained a testimony of my own. Serving a full time mission helped me to grow much stronger in my testimony and to become more deeply converted to the Gospel. As I was preparing to go to Colombia to serve a full-time mission, I realized that I needed to know for myself that the Book of Mormon was true. It was no longer enough just to believe. I remember the night I prayed to Heavenly Father pleading to know for myself that the Book of Mormon was true. I knew I would not be able to tell the people in Colombia that the Book of Mormon was true if I did not know of a surity myself. The words came to my mind and to my heart, "The Book of Mormon is true." I felt the response through every fiber of my being. I then knew it was true. The feelings were so strong that I can still feel them today, many years later. As an adult, I have continued in the church because I know it is true and because it brings me closer to my Savior Jesus Christ and to my Heavenly Father. This brings me great joy.

How I live my faith

One of my greatest joys is visiting the Lord's temples. There is a special spirit in the temples of the Lord that cannot be found anywhere else. Each time I go I can feel the love that God has for His children. It gives me hope and strength. I am very excited that a new temple is under construction in Fort Collins, Colorado that will be quite close to where I live. Each Sunday we attend church near our home as a family. Everyone is given an opportunity to serve and to contribute at church. I have especially enjoyed the time I have spent working with the youth programs and Scouting. We also have activities for the youth one night a week where they can spend time together and develop character and skills. I take time each day to pray to my Heavenly Father and to read and study from the scriptures. There is great strength in the word of God that helps me to overcome life's trials.

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Bill Harvey
To me the Atonement of Jesus Christ is a very intimate and personal manifestation of His love for us. I have become convince that Jesus would have sumitted to the same sacrifice if for only one person. As in Christ's earthly ministry when He healed on person at a time with only one documented exception of the 10 lepers, He reaches out to us one at a time through the power of His Atonement. It may not always feel like He is there, but He is. I know He is. He will stand by us and wait until we are ready to accept Him into our lives and to receive what He has for us. As soon as we are ready and sincere and willing to follow at any cost, He will open the windows of Heaven to pour out his blessings. As I look back on my life, I can see trials and difficulties. But with the perspective that time has given me, I can recognize the hand of God in each of them. Those trials were tailored uniquely to me to mold and to shape me into what He wanted me to become. Without His hand, I would never have grown to know Him as I do. I have a long way to go to become all that the Lord wants me to be. But I trust Him now more than ever to teach and to guide me.
