Hi I'm John Hilton

I have been a Mormon my whole life. I grew up in Seattle, and have lived in Boise, Boston, Miami, Mexico and Utah.

About Me

I was born in California, grew up in Seattle, went to college in Utah and also served a mission for the LDS Church in Colorado. I am married and have five children. I am highly involved in the church, especially in teaching young men and women. I am employed as a religious educator and author. I also do research on open-access issues.

Why I am a Mormon

I started out as a Mormon because my parents and their parents were, going back for several generations. But now I am a Mormon because I have prayed about the teachings of the Mormon church and know for myself through the Holy Ghost that they are true. I have seen firsthand how the Mormon church points people to Jesus Christ and true happiness.

How I live my faith

I go to church with my family every Sunday. We also work hard to practice our religion as a family during the week. We study God's word together every day, we pray as a family, we look for people that we can serve. We are definitely not perfect, but we are trying. In addition, I serve in the church as a youth advisor. I present lessons to young men and help participate in mid-week activities with them.

What is the Law of Chastity?

John Hilton
The law of chastity refers to a code for sexual conduct. Simply put, people should not have sexual relationships with anybody except their legal husband or wife. One of the things I really value about the Mormon church is that it gives teenagers specific guidance regarding sexual purity. The church has a pamphlet called "For the Strength of Youth" which says, "Before marriage, do not do anything to arouse the powerful emotions that must be expressed only in marriage. Do not participate in passionate kissing, lie on top of another person, or touch the private, sacred parts of another person’s body, with or without clothing. Do not allow anyone to do that with you. Do not arouse those emotions in your own body." I believe that teenagers and young adults benefit from hearing such advice directly and straight up. There are not many places in the world where you will hear this advice but I have seen it bless the lives of many, many people.  Show more Show less

How are the activities of the Mormon missionaries funded?

John Hilton
That's a great question. It varies from missionary to missionary. In my case, I paid for part of the costs of the mission and my parents paid for the rest. It cost about $10,000 for the full two years. I have known many missionaries who personally paid the full cost of their missions. I also know some missionaries who have received donations from members of the congregation because the young men and their families could not pay the cost. Show more Show less
