Hi I'm Alan

I love my wife and daugher. I love to paint, play Go, write software, and read books. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I've lived in Utah, Pennsylvannia, Arizona, Texas, Alaska, and Australia, and have worked for IBM, the US Government, and half a dozen small start-ups. I'm madly in love with my wife, who majored in mathematics and loves to play the piano and organ. My daughter is wonderful! She teaches us every day how important the next generation is. I love compilers, systems level programming, and painting in acrylics. I play Go, ranked at about 10 kyu, and love to fly stunt kites. My favorite pasttime is reading. I love to learn about other places, ideas, times, and people, and even lose myself in a good fantasy or sci-fi novel.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a fith generation Mormon, but nearly left the church when I was seventeen. I remember after one meeting one of the men said to me "Wasn't the spirit strong in that meeting?" But I hadn't felt anything, and wondered if he was just trying to impress me. I decided I needed to know for myself. I promised God that if he would let me know if he was really there I would do the best I could to follow him, but if not I would leave the Church and become a secular humanist. I promised I would do everything I could to live the commandments and study hard for six months, because I'd been taught that God expects us to do our part if we want an answer to prayer. Two weeks later, while praying, the power of the Holy Spirit filled me, and I knew God loved me and accepted my promise. I knew that the Book of Mormon was written by prophets called by God to teach about Jesus Christ, and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was truly a restoration of the Church that Christ established during his life.

How I live my faith

I have served those in my congregation by giving sermons, teaching classes, singing in the choir, and helping keep financial and membership records. I've helped distribute food and other needed items to those in need, and sing in the choir. These opportunities to serve have helped me as much as they have helped those I have served. I'm grateful Christ has given us so many ways to learn through doing, in addition to studying.
