Hi I'm John

I live in Oregon. I am a convert to the Mormon church -- twice...

About Me

I am married and my wife and I have a blended family of 7 children, all between the ages of 22 and 30. We have 2 grandchildren. I work as a consultant, helping organizations develop their leadership capabilities and build strong teams. I love sports (all sports), I read constantly, and spend time with my family.

Why I am a Mormon

I joined the church at the age of 18 and became very active in the church, married and started a family. Over the next 18 years I served in many positions in the church -- teaching high school seminary, leading the young men's organization, etc. But I started to struggle with sin and at the same time started to doubt my faith. Unrepented sin led to greater struggles until I finally left the church. For 11 years I wandered. From the outside, my life looked fine, but inside I was miserable. My children continued to be active in the church and when it was time for my youngest son to serve a mission I tried to convince him not to go. He shared with me his testimony of the Savior and His church. I wondered if that was what was missing in my life.. I had a week off of work and decided to read the Book of Mormon cover to cover in 5 days. I had read the book before but never in such a short amount of time. I needed to know if it was true. I began by getting on my knees and asking my Heavenly Father to bless me with an understanding of the truth and then started reading. Over the next 5 days I felt numerous witnesses of the Spirit that what I was reading was the word of God. When I finished the book, I knew what was missing -- it was the Savior and His church. I went to church for the first time in years and knew I had come home. It took some time to go through the repentance process, but when I was ready I was rebaptized. The love I felt that day from my Savior, and from family and friends, was so overpowering I cried tears of great joy! I am so grateful that the arms of my Savior continued to be open to me, to welcome me back like the prodigal son.

How I live my faith

I serve as a Sunday School teacher for youth. Right now we are studying the Old Testament. I also serve in my community. Just recently I returned from 2 1/2 weeks in a remote village in Kenya where I visited schools and taught a leadership workshop for school administrators.

How can we increase our faith in Jesus Christ?

John
For me, I increase my faith in Jesus Christ by learning about Him -- studying his life and teachings in the scriptures. My faith also increases as I follow His example -- love my neighbor, give service, keep His commandments. My faith also increases as I recognize and heed the promptings that come from the Holy Ghost -- to do the will of my Savior.
