Hi I'm Rick Williams

I'm a Husband & father of 4 adopted kids. I've endured same gender attraction and I'm a faithful Mormon.

About Me

My mother died when I was 2. I grew up in a troubled family. I ran away from home and lived in parks by the time I was ten. I lived in a Catholic foster home from 10-14. I lived with my brother and searched many churches for truth between 15 and 16 years of age. I was legally emancipated at the age of 16 and became my own legal guardian. I dropped out of High School in 9th grade and worked 100 hours a week in a restaurant. I hired a busboy who asked me for Sundays off work so he could go to "Sacrament Meeting" and my life will never be the same because that young 16 year old young man stood up for the Sabbath Day. I was loved into the church by this young man and his incredible family. I learned through study and prayer that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is TRUE. That was not a convenient thing to learn. Learning the doctrines of the church meant I had to change. I had to repent if I was to be true to my faith. This would not be easy. At the age of 20, I served a full time mission for the church. After my mission I spent the next ten years of my life, working to understand same gender attraction, myself and my purpose in life. At the age of 35, I married my eternal companion in the Temple of God. Within a few years, we adopted 4 children thru the foster care system in the US. I have learned that we all choose how we respond to the circumstances of our lives. I have endured many things and hope to endure all that God has for me to endure.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because a 16 year old young man asked his boss for Sundays off work so he could honor the Sabbath Day. I am a Mormon because I've read The Book of Mormon many times and I know that it is the word of God. I am a Mormon because I have studied the doctrines of the church. I have prayed a lifetime of prayers and I have cried gallons of tears and I have heard the voice of God to me personally that this church is true! I am a Mormon because The Lord has changed my life and blessed me as I have lived the principles and doctrines of my faith. I am a Mormon because I love the Savior and I love my Heavenly Father and the scriptures are so clear to me that no other church even registers in the same solar system of significance and purity. I am a Mormon because to not be would be to deny everything that I know to be true. I am a Mormon not because it is a religion of convenience or simplicity but because the LDS gospel is inexhaustible, the blessings eternal and most of all it is true. I am a Mormon because I am a child of God and the church is where his family gathers. I am a Mormon because I know that a young boy named Joseph Smith saw God and the resurrected Jesus Christ, was tutored by angels and resurrected beings, received the priesthood authority under the hands of biblical apostles, and restored the true church of Jesus Christ to the earth after a long period of spiritual darkness. I am a Mormon because I know by thousands of hours of study and countless personal prayers and spiritual experiences too sacred to share in this forum - that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is NOT just another church...it is THE CHURCH, THE KINGDOM of GOD on the earth today. The church is True. The doctrines are true. The priesthood authority has been restored to the earth today by the ancient apostles Peter, James and John as well as numerous other prophets of old.

How I live my faith

I work as a Manager for a major retailer in furniture. I love photography and travel..which seem to go together. I live my faith by respecting others and loving my family. I live my faith by my choices of the last 30 years. I have chosen for 30 years not to embrace a gay lifestyle, which for many years was very hard. I have chosen to live my faith and I have been richly blessed. After 30 years, the Lord has blessed me with much reduced attractions to the same gender and dramatically increased attractions towards the opposite gender. I love my wife and my family and I am so very grateful for them. My family has not come to me without much trial, sacrifice and faith. Life is a journey and we each have our own journey, but GOD will not forsake us and He will bring to pass His purposes. I teach my children now the lessons I have learned thru the gospel. I love the Temple. I go to the Temple to commune with God. I repent when I fall short of the divine nature. Everything in life I view through the lens of the doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I reject outright the false yet popular philosophies of the world and I rely wholeheartedly upon the doctrines of God. Not everyone that has attractions to the same gender chooses homosexual behavior. Just as not everyone attracted to the opposite gender that is married chooses to commit adultery. Not everyone that is unmarried and has attractions to the opposite gender chooses to commit fornication. Attractions are NOT a conscience choice - but our behavior to those attractions always is our choice. Our choices are a reflection of our beliefs and our ability to align our choices to our beliefs. Some people change their beliefs to align with their behavior. Some people change their behavior to align with their beliefs. I choose the later. If you experience same gender attraction - don't give in and don't give up! God Loves You! I am a witness of what God can do in HIS time.

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

Rick Williams
I am now 52. Since I was 11, I experienced same gender attraction. Since my conversion to the LDS faith at age 18, I struggled greatly for decades dealing with this attraction and keeping true to my faith. Until I was 45, I had 0 sexual attractions to the opposite gender. I was married at age 35 because I loved a woman and God told me I should marry her in answer to personal prayer. Living a heterosexual life has been a process of evolution for me. I have come to believe over 4 decades of experience, that same gender attraction is simply one manifestation of what the Book of Mormon calls "The Natural Man" (see Mosiah 3:19) and just as all manifestations of the natural man must be put off in order to put on the divine nature, so with same gender attraction.
