Hi I'm Steve

I grew up in the Great Northwest. Now married for twenty years, and father of five. I love music and writing. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have been married now for nearly twenty years, to the love of my life. We have five wonderful daughters who give purpose and meaning to my life. In recent years my physical abilities have become more and more limited due to a progressive disease (multiple sclerosis) and my loving wife and children have blessed me beyond measure with their loving kindness and helping hands. Music has always been a huge part of my life. Growing up, my parents exposed us to a wide range of styles and artists (mostly classical and jazz). Seeing Dave Bruebeck in concert was something I'll never forget. My interests turned to rock and roll, and I enjoyed seeing dozens of artists as a young adult. I enjoyed playing the drums for about thirty five years, performing with several groups, choirs, and bands. Professionally, I have owned and managed several small businesses, as well as working as an executive in the corporate world. These days, I am focused on returning to school, and working to develop a new life as a writer — something I can do with or without the cooperation of my legs. I am also trying to make a difference where I can, through volunteering my time in community service, and mostly trying to be the best husband and father I can be.

Why I am a Mormon

As I reflect on my life – where I've been, what I've experienced, and what life is like today, I feel very fortunate to have the restored gospel of Jesus Christ in my life. It is the foundation upon which my entire life is built. My membership in The Church is precious to me. The reasons why I am a Mormon are many, but to sum it up, I am reminded of the counsel from the apostle Peter, found in the New Testament: “be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15) As I reviewed certain scriptures, I realized it is more than just the knowledge of Jesus Christ. Specifically, I came across a passage in the Book of Mormon that says we can be “sanctified... through the shedding of the blood of Christ, which is in the covenant of the Father unto the remission of your sins” – Moroni 10:33 The key was the word “covenant”. I was reminded that I have made sacred covenants with my Father in Heaven – “covenants”, or “two-way promises” with God. There are Assurances! Hope began to spring in me as I reflected on this. My spirit was illuminated! Those covenants are only available through the Lord's restored Church – through the authority of His Holy Priesthood, which is only found in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His restored gospel gives me light. It gives me direction. It answers every question I have ever had about the purpose of life, and about God's plan for His children.

How I live my faith

My life has been filled with opportunity to serve the Lord. I served for two years as a full-time missionary in the Southeast United States, and I have been blessed to serve locally in the Church in numerous ways.-- in Sunday School as a teacher and also as a leader, with the youth as a leader, and in various other positions that have richly blessed my life. I am currently serving again as a local Sunday School leader, and as a “home teacher”, where I have the opportunity to visit a couple families each month, and assist them in any way I can. I also get asked to teach the local priesthood class on occasion, which I find to be very rewarding and uplifting.
