Hi I'm Mat

I grew up in and still live in Texas. I work in vocational rehabilitation. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I'm a father of two daughters and a son. I currently work as a licensed professional counselor, essentially working as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. I am a huge Texas Rangers fan and I love college football. I do enjoy water recreation activities, and am a certified SCUBA diver.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon for many reasons. I know that God lives and that Jesus Christ is His son and our savior. I have never discovered another church that teaches this more clearly. I appreciate the family values that are preached, and I love being a part of a church that challenges me to live a christian life every single day. Jesus Christ sacrificed his entire life for us, and I like that the church asks us to sacrifice as well.

How I live my faith

I currently serve as the leader of a men's group that works to serve other members of our congregation. We have about 40 active members of our group. I ensure that every member of the group has another member of the group that checks in with them and their family at least once a month. We strive to meet any needs that we can, from doing yard work, helping with moves, to just providing a listening ear.

Why is family so important to Mormons?

God has taught us that the family unit is eternal. None of us will be fully satisfied with life if we don't have someone to share it with in the next life. Also, family is the most effective way to continue teaching the next generation the values and standards of the gospel Show more Show less

Why do some call Mormonism a cult?

Many people believe that Mormons are taught to blindly follower there leaders and never question what they are told to do. This is not the case. We are constantly encouraged to pray and seek the reassurance of the Spirit that what our leaders ask us to do is actually God's will. No one is coerced to do anything that they are not comfortable with.  Show more Show less

How is the Book of Mormon different from the Bible? How did Joseph Smith obtain the “golden plates” or Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon is a record of people who lived on the American continent during the same general time frame as the Bible. These people were also receiving communication from God through prophets. The Book of Mormon shares their experiences and a story of their people. Joseph Smith was chosen by God to be a prophet in the modern era. The Lord lead Joseph to find the plates that contained the records we now know as the Book of Mormon.  Show more Show less

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

I do. God has told us that he is an unchanging god. Amos 3:7 tells us that God will do nothing unless he informs us through a prophet. I believe His word, and I have experienced more blessings than I can count for following the counsels given by our modern day prophet. Show more Show less

What is being a Mormon like?

No matter where you go in the world you have a connection with people that feels like family. There is a peace and comfort that comes from knowing that God speaks to a prophet today. There is power in knowing that God has a specific plan for mankind as a whole, and for each of us individually. I know that through this church I have learned how to feel the Spirit of God and gain understanding of what God needs from me. Show more Show less

What is the Mormon lifestyle like? How do Mormons live?

Mormons live just like anyone else you know. We keep ourselves busy with work, school, church activities, and community involvement. We put a lot of emphasis on family and serving in our community. We seek to have fun, to follow the commandments of God, and uplift everyone around us. Show more Show less

Why are Mormons asked to donate 10% of their income to their Church?

This is called tithing. It is an eternal principle that was taught even during the time of Christ. I gives us an opportunity to choose to share our blessings from God to support and bless other people. Jesus Christ taught us to care of the sick and poor among us. Tithing is one way in which we can do that. Show more Show less

Why is self-reliance important to Mormons? Why do Mormons talk about emergency preparedness?

The better we are at providing for ourselves, the more ability we can have to help others. There is peace and reassurance in knowing that if we prepare ourselves for emergencies, then when they happen they don't feel so much like emergencies. Show more Show less

Why don’t women hold the priesthood in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? How do Mormon women lead in the Church?

My opinion is that men are asked to hold the priesthood so that they can develop attributes that women have naturally. In my experience women are the driving force behind providing loving care for individuals in the church. Every man I have ever known that has held a priesthood leadership position in this church acknowledges that he would never succeed without the support and advice of his wife.  Women play vital roles in leadership within the church. The Relief Society organization is key in ministering to the needs of church members, women teach Sunday School, lead youth groups, and regularly share sermons during our church services. The priesthood is an authority that God gives to act in His name, and should only be used to serve and bless others. I know that modern day prophets have received instruction from God that the priesthood is to be held by the men only. I don't pretend to know God's reasons, I choose to accept his council with faith knowing that he is just in all things. Show more Show less

Why is authority to perform a baptism important?

God has always given authority to perform certain rites to specific individuals. It is no different today than it was in ancient times. Baptism is a most significant step in committing one's self to the gospel of Jesus Christ, we are washed clean of our sins and born again of the water and spirit. Having the proper authority given from God is so important to ensuring that God recognizes and accepts such an effort. Show more Show less
