Hi I'm Jordan

I'm a Mormon. I was a missionary in Lima, Peru

About Me

I'm a Mormon. I'm studying Computer Science and Computational Mathematics at Utah State University. I currently work as a Software Tester at a USU research laboratory. I'm 6'8" tall and wear size 17 shoes. I love to go to concerts, I've recently been to the Imagine Dragons, the Killers, Parachute, and Muse concerts. I love to go to the movies with my family. My favorite movie is either Inception or Groundhog day.

Why I am a Mormon

More than ever, I feel that the Lord has a plan for me because he loves me. I feel that following the gospel can only help me grow. There's nothing to lose and everything to gain through righteous living. There are many, many miracles in my life that I can't help but attribute to God. After all I've been given, it would be impertinent (even painfully rude) of me to turn my back to these miracles. I know that I am loved by a father in Heaven. The more I live his gospel the more I realize how big aspirations like money, power, and fame mean nothing in the end.

How I live my faith

I'm leaving for a full-time, two year mission to Lima Peru in September. I'm preparing to go to the temple within the next couple of weeks. Like anyone, I can't help but wonder about the temple. I've been comforted to learn that the temple is a place where learning and covenants are made. It's not a secret, it's sacred. I'm very excited.

Why do Mormons believe in “eternal life?”

Eternal life-"life as God lives it"-may seem to be a hard doctrine to grasp. However, eternal life is the greatest part of God's plan for us. I can't help but be comforted to hear that after this life God has a plan for me so large that I can't comprehend the immensity of joy that will come from it. The small price of keeping his commandments and believing in his goodness is infinitely outweighed by its consequences. I believe in eternal life because I have enough faith in God to believe that through his forgiveness I can experience joy beyond measure. At the core, I believe it because of hope. Does The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints endorse political parties?

No. The church does not endorse any political party. If the church ever appears to support any political party it is because the church has definite stances on social issues that may degrade freedom of religion, like abortion or same-sex marriage. God has given an absolute law, and has also given us our freedom to choose to live that law or not. Others may choose to not live that law, inasmuch as it does not restrict the freedom of others. Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

No, only male priesthood holders age 18-26 are asked to go on missions as a duty of Priesthood service. Women age 19 and older and retired couples can also go on missions, but are not required to serve. Members of the church view missionary service as a blessing (like all commandments), not a machine-like requirement. My mission was the single greatest experience of my life. The things I learned, felt, and experienced were worth every sacrifice I made to go on my mission. Show more Show less

What is faith?

To understand faith in God, faith in another person must first be defined. What does it mean when I say that I have faith in my mother? It means that I have confidence in her Why do I have confidence in my mother? I know her. For example, I know that she would be merciful and would still love me if I became a drug addict. How did I get to know my mother? Though the feeling is innate, I got to know my mother by spending time with her, by experiencing life with her. My confidence grows every time I experience her love. It's the exact same thing with God. Christ said "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." (John 17:3) The same is true of faith in God. Faith in God is confidence in Him, and one gains faith in God by strengthening your relationship with Him. You strengthen your relationship with God by conversing with Him through prayer. Sincere prayers will be answered, which is God communicating with you. It is upon prayer that a personal relationship with God is obtained. "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" - Atticus Finch, To Kill a Mockingbird. To have faith in God, you have to walk in Christ's shoes. Only living as Christ lived will you gain confidence in the savior. This will give you faith to live more like Christ lives, which will give you more confidence. This is the cycle of faith. Why is authority to perform a baptism important?

I was raised in the church. I was baptized at 8 years old. I don't really remember anything about my baptism. If I may be frank, I didn't know what I was getting into. I'm so thankful that recently I have been able to understand the full meaning of my baptism. In this church, we take of the sacrament every week to renew those covenants. Baptism is a witness to God that essentially, if you keep His commandments, He'll guide me through your life and number you as one of His people. An amazing thing happens in the gospel when you keep his commandments (say, reading scriptures). The more you do it, the more you understand why it was a commandment. Essentially, I feel that I can't describe the blessings of being baptized because the feeling is unique to the ordinance. Show more Show less

Do Mormons regard the Bible as Holy Scripture and the word of God?

We believe that the bible is Holy Scripture and is the word of God. It teaches us of the nature of the covenants that God made with his people in times of the Old Testament. It teaches us how to come to the Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. It teaches us of prophecies that have been fulfilled, and are being fulfilled in our times. God spoke to his messengers, who wrote His words in separate books by separate people throughout thousands of years. Many of these books were gathered into a compilation in the centuries following Christ's death, and published as the Bible, which means "the books." However, the Bible hints that many of these books were lost. The Bible is true, and yet it does not contain everything God has ever spoken to men. The Bible itself tells us that everything he has spoken could not ever be written down (see John 21:25). God stills lives, and God still speaks to men through prophets. Some of the additional Holy Books of Scripture that modern prophets have given us are the Book of Mormon, which testifies of the truth of the Bible. Show more Show less
