Hi I'm Roger

Magrath is my home town - despite being born in the big city to the north.

About Me

I run many of the local town websites as a community service, since I haven't discovered a good way to get paid much to do it. I work full time at the local pharmacy and fix computers and websites as time permits on the side (see rogerdavies.net)

Why I am a Mormon

I was born and raised in the church but my father passed away when I was ten. He was hit by a drunk driver on a dark BC road while returning from a performance with our stake (church) choir. Mom was also in the car but survived with only minor injuries. I am the oldest of 5 children. Mom learned to drive, returned to school and finished her teaching degree while working and raising us. She never spoke much of the accident - she did not want us to feel bitter towards the unfortunate who had caused our family to be in this situation. She organized Christmas Projects for us to 'help the needy' and improved her own talents in music writing and painting as time permitted. My maternal grandparents lived in Magrath, and after a few years, Mom sold the house in Calgary and made the big move with 5 kids in tow back home so Grandpa could help raise us. We built a new house down the street from Grandma and Grandpa's - her parents home - when I was in Grade 11. I recall visiting Magrath for summer breaks and thinking it was the best place in the world to visit. Now I get to live in my favorite vacation spot year round. Meanwhile, my good wife's family also decided to return to Magrath when she was in Grade 10 building their home around the corner from us. After serving a 2 year mission in Montreal Canada, we were engaged and married and now have six daughters of our own. We lived for a time in big city Edmonton and when our oldest was in Grade 7 we moved our family back to Magrath, this time into my ancestral home .. Grandma and Grandpa's house. They are no longer alive, but their spirit remains with us. Our mom's are now both Great-Grandma's and it is nice to have them living just around the corners from our home. There is a T-Shirt for sale downtown with the logo: Magrath - My Hometown .. I guess that would sum up my feeling.

How I live my faith

We keep busy in a few ways: Family - now with 18 grandchildren from age 12 and down we have a lot of birthday cards to write! Community Service - Shauna and I serve with the local Lions Club with each of us serving in club executive currently and in years past. We have recently upgraded the local Lions Childrens Playground and completed our second playground built at the Town Fishpond. I am currently the webmaster and secretary for the new Magrath Chamber of Commerce and other local service organizations. For a time I served as a volunteer firefighter, but have since retired. Church - we serve in whatever callings we are asked to do. Shauna currently works with the children in our ward as a councillor in the Primary and I currently serve as a member of the stake high council - a glorified title that means I get to help the Stake President do the work that needs to be done here in Magrath.
