Hi I'm John

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I recently got married and am going to college. I am a public health major and hoping to get into dental school. I am originally from Brazil and have been moving around when I was young because of my dad's work. Because of that I gained a love of travel. One of my hobbies is photography and learning about other cultures.

Why I am a Mormon

I get asked this question quite a bit. I remember I used to be the one asking this questions to others. I wasn't always a mormon. I wasn't any particular religion growing up. I always grew up with the idea that all religion was flawed and that religion had become something you tell people you are, like another type of social class. But I did believe that there was God. I don't know why but I always felt there was. I used to go to a private catholic middle/high school for a number of years and became very familiar with that religion. It wasn't till after I graduated from high school that I first started thinking about the mormon religion. Honestly, I was pretty against the mormon church. My father and 2 of my brothers were members and I always refused to listen to them. One day I was pretty depressed with my life and how it was playing out and I then over heard my father talking to one of my brothers about the book of mormon. Particularly about a promised that the mormon prophet gave to everyone that if they read the book of mormon and finished it by the end of that year they will be blessed. My first reaction was a negative one but it kept coming back to me and so I finally gave in and began reading it. As I was reading it I began feeling something in my heart. It felt like what I was reading could actually be true. In the end of the book there is a promise. The promise is that who ever reads this book and desires to know whether or not it is true to ask God. I thought it was quite a simple promise but I did as it asked. I knelt down and begged God to tell me whether or not it was true. I wasn't sure if it was or not but I felt that if it really was true then I would live it but if it wasn't then I would simply continue living my life how I have been. I didn't really think I would get an answer but I did. I testify to you, I really got an answer. I somehow felt deep down in my heart and soul that this was true and I have felt that way ever since.

How I live my faith

I live my faith by trying to do what I believe Christ would want me to do and live. I strive to live his example as its written in the scriptures. I not only try to reach out a helping hand to others but also have that love and charity christ had for everyone. I try to participate with ward activities as much as I can. It is always a lot of fun and I like making new friends. Its great to be able to help one another. There are several ways I find I am able to help others. One is just to be a friend. Another is to help learn and live the gospel the best we can.

Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

John
No, a mission is not a mandatory service. Young men are encouraged to serve a mission but it is their choice whether or not they will. Show more Show less
