Hi I'm Vaughn Hughes

I live in Northern Idaho and work as a software engineer. I'm an independent Mormon.

About Me

I'm a very happily married forty-something father of five. I grew up in Oregon, where I learned to appreciate the beauty of God's creations and to enjoy experiencing the seasons. My lifelong love of learning and hunger for truth has left me with probably too many books on my shelves. I develop software for a living, but live for time with my family and for learning of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a pretty critical thinker and an innate learner by nature, but it wasn't just that the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ all fit & made sense that convinced me. I loved that the Lord, from the outset, promised in the Book of Mormon that I myself could seek to know what is true and not rely on the word of others. That rang true. And when I did go and study it and ponder it deeply in my own heart, the Lord brought intelligence & understanding to my mind through the Holy Spirit, confirming the truth of it. I realized something else marvelous & wonderful that came back to light through Joseph Smith: the Lord desires that I should literally come to know Him by returning into His presence in this life. (John 14:16-18) And He is no respecter of persons. (Acts 10:34) He wants me to know His truth and become redeemed by Him. I believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and that His own hand is once again active, gathering his sheep in across this great world. For those willing to humble themselves, to change their lives in the face of new truths (though often painful), and to seek earnestly the Greatest Gift, I believe that Jesus Christ himself stands ready to reward His true followers in the most personal way, as promised in the scriptures and by the Prophet Joseph Smith. It is this supernal gift He offers that drives me and inspires me to seek out the deepest of His mysteries. (1 Nephi 10:19) How great is God!

How I live my faith

To me, living the gospel is about patterning my life after Jesus Christ and following Him and only Him. It is about sacrificing my own needs and helping & lifting others wherever the Lord puts me. It's about relieving suffering: feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, visiting the sick & afflicted, and ministering to the "least of these". My family is where it starts and it extends to everyone, without regard to church affiliation or anything else. Living by faith in the Lord is about learning to recognize His voice and then obeying His commandments that come through it. Not the commandments and traditions of men that come from every direction around us in today's world.

Can a husband and wife be together forever? Do Mormons believe that families will live together in heaven?

Vaughn Hughes
Absolutely. Beyond my desire to enter back into the presence of God Himself, this is one of my greatest desires. We believe that married couples can go to our temples and be "sealed", meaning they have a conditional promise of being united together beyond this life, should they prove faithful to the Lord and each other such that the Holy Spirit of Promise ratifies and confirms the "sealing". (D&C 132:26) This is something God can make happen and something for which my wife and I are striving. Show more Show less
