Hi I'm Doug.

I grew up in Los Angeles, California, the youngest of 10 children. I am a father, grandfather and a dentist. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

My dad was a milk man and delivered dairy products to grocery stores. We didn't have much money but my parents instilled in us the importance of education and hard work. I worked my way through college and just before starting dental school I married the most wonderful and beautiful girl in the world. We started our family right away. We have 7 children (6 living) and 20 grandchildren. Dentistry has provided Sally and I the opportunity to serve others. Twice a year we have gone on dental humanitarian trips to Central America. Together we served as missionaries in Chile from 2012 to 2014.

Why I am a Mormon

I was raised in the Mormon faith. As a teenager I rebelled against my parents and some of the church's teachings. An older brother invited me to live with him in Chicago when I was 16. The change in environment and new friends helped me get back on track. I was one of only a few Mormons in my high school. I was often challenged about my religion and I had to stand up for what I believed. I started thinking seriously about my future. Through sincere prayer and study I came to believe that what I had been taught in my home and at church was true. After a year at BYU I received a call to serve a mission in Chile. Before going to Chile I spent 3 months studying Spanish at the language training mission at BYU. When I was there I had a remarkable experience. In one of our small classes I expressed my "belief" in the gospel but I couldn't honestly say that I "knew" it was true. My instructor began to testify to me in Spanish. I didn't understand the words he spoke in Spanish but the Spirit was so strong I "knew" that he was telling me the truth - that the gospel was true. The language barrier did not matter. I wept openly. I was filled with the Spirit and I no longer just believed. I knew and I know that Jesus Christ is my Savior, that Joseph Smith was a prophet and that the Bible and Book of Mormon and other scriptures are the word of God. I have had many more spiritual manifestations since that time more than 40 years ago. Each one has reconfirmed to me the truthfulness of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ.

How I live my faith

Ever since serving a mission I have loved teaching the gospel. From the beginning of our marriage, Sally and I have always had teaching and leadership responsibilities in the church. I have learned that I am the happiest when I 1) Listen to and follow the Spirit, 2) Live according to the teachings and example of Jesus Christ, and 3) Serve others by ministering to them and teaching them the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I have had the privilege of serving as a home teacher, visiting the homes of a few members each month, for over 40 years. I have shared their joys and challenges. I have ministered to them and knelt with them in prayer, asking Heavenly Father to bless them in their particular needs. I have taught classes in Sunday School, Priesthood (organizations for the men and boys 12 and over), and seminary (early morning scripture study for high school students). I have worked with the young men in the church as a scoutmaster and youth leader. I have served as an executive secretary to both a bishop and a stake president. I have served as a bishop's counselor and as a counselor to a stake president and on a stake high council. I have been a branch president (minister) over a small congregation for 4 1/2 years and stake president (pastor) over multiple congregations for 9 1/2 years. In all of these service opportunities I have had the privilege of teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. When you teach you learn. I have been studying and learning the Gospel of Jesus Christ my entire adult life. It has had a tremendous impact on my life and my family's life. I am striving to live according to the Gospel of Jesus Christ because I know that will continue to bring happiness and blessings to me and my family.
