Hi I'm Stephanie

Life is fascinating and I love it. God, service, learning, family, friends and running, are SOME of my passions. I'm a Mormon :).

About Me

I am a typical girl that's not so typical. I'm quirky and normal. I'm outgoing and shy. I'm girly and athletic. I can enjoy jumping off a rope swing with some friends at one moment and then also enjoy sitting around a table with a bunch of stuffy professors and talk about social issues and the state of the world. I'm a peacemaker and yet I can debate you and win. My biggest phobias are loneliness and boredom. I love learning from PEOPLE. Everyone has an important story to tell and I love hearing them. I love hearing from people like my grandma, people I meet during races (marathoners are CRAZY!), people I meet on planes or on the metro, my 3 year old niece, my friends in my church group, my siblings, my dance classmates, etc. I always find myself ridiculously busy, late, and disorganized, and I thank the whole world for being patient with me. There are few things I would rather do than to just spend time with my family. Currently I'm a grad student and I'm passionate about helping families stay strong- and I'm just hoping I can finish my thesis! I am a believer in compassion. I truly believe there is good in almost everyone, and everyone deserves a chance to be loved and to change. I also believe that life is meant to be happy, and so everything I do is meant to help other people feel happier and loved. People who choose to be alone and selfish have got to be miserable...and people who see the world as a horrible place really just need to chill out. That's my philosophy :)

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because I know that the teachings of the Church are true. How do I know? Results in my life. I feel peace in my heart and warmth in my soul on a daily basis because I now know who I am- and I feel like God is with me every day. I'm His daughter! What truth could be more wonderful than that? Everything is so CLEAR and RIGHT. Though I am required to live by faith, I have so much confidence that everything I experience will build me up and make me a stronger person. Following the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ has strengthened my relationships, strengthened my self-esteem, given me the capacity to grow in love, intelligence, and creativity. I am healthy in every aspect of my life. When life gets inevitably HARD- the gospel makes my burdens easy to bear. I am imperfect and make a lot of mistakes- but Heavenly Father is there to coach me through it every day. I know that everything will be all right because there was a plan to help me succeed from the beginning. Jesus Christ atoned for every sin, pain, and weakness that I have- and I just need to accept it by being his disciple. The even greater blessing is knowing that His atonement made it possible for us to conquer death- and live with our families again. Forever happiness and forever family is what I want and desire most- and the gospel provides that for me.

How I live my faith

I attend a young single adult church group and I serve as a visiting teacher and activity coordinator. I help reach out to members of the ward and plan activities to help them feel welcome and build friendships. As a visiting teacher, I visit a few sisters and we strengthen our friendship and discuss the gospel. In my spare time I try to be an advocate for decency in the community and try to involve myself in projects that help the poor. The Savior said that we aren't true Christians unless we love one another as He loves us. These opportunities have helped me strengthen my ability to love and it has changed my life. By serving, I've gotten a better idea of how He loves- though what I feel is very simple and insignificant in comparison to how much He loves. I also sacrifice indulgent things like some of my own time, money, and popular "vices" like alcohol, drugs, and unhealthy living so I'm more able to serve. And it is SO worth it.

How can I know Mormonism is true?

You can come to know that Mormonism (The gospel of Jesus Christ) is true by searching, pondering, and praying about the words of our Heavenly Father. These were delivered by His Son, Jesus Christ. Heavenly Father has given us the great blessing of knowing the truth for ourselves through this process because He wants us to choose the truth for ourselves. God does not command His children to follow Him blindly, because He knows that won't bring us happiness. A couple verses of scripture explains this process: "And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Jesus Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." (Moroni 10:4-5) God promises you that you will receive an answer to your prayers as you strengthen your faith. This faith can be strengthened by living the principles you learn in the scriptures. The confirmation of truth may become noticeable quickly, but for most of us it comes gradually and takes time. This is because change takes time, and developing a relationship with God takes time. However, the truth will become clearer as you see how these things work to improve your life because they are good and right. Show more Show less

How can we come to know our Father in Heaven?

Our Father in Heaven loves each of us very much, and He has provided many ways for us to become close to Him and understand Him. First, He has given us the gift of prayer so that we can communicate with Him. All throughout the scriptures, God asks us to "ask of Him" and to "seek" with the promise that "ye shall find," and to "knock" that "it shall be opened unto you." Christ showed the importance of seeking out the Father in prayer throughout the scriptures, and was very close to Him throughout His life and ministry. Through prayer, we are able to express gratitude for our Father, tell Him about our concerns, pray for others, and ask for needed blessings. Through this process, we learn that He is so merciful, kind, loving, and all-knowing. God is very interested in the very details of our lives, no matter how small or insignificant they may seem. He cares about each one of us, and wants us to speak with Him about our lives daily. Through the Holy Ghost, we can receive counsel from Him and feel of His love through feelings and impressions. In the scriptures, we are told to always call upon God, and to always have a "prayer in our hearts." If we do this, we can always feel connected with our Father. When we recognize how thoroughly God is interested and involved in our lives, He will become very real to us. We are also given other ways to know about our Father in Heaven. We are given the scriptures and modern day revelation through His prophets that testify of His existence and divinity. We can come to know Him through recognizing the beauty of His creations and reflect upon the intelligence and ingenious systematic processes that maintain and sustain life continually. Christ was the Creator-but it was under the direction of the Father that He was able to do all things. If we reflect upon all things that are light and good, we understand a little more about the Father. When we feel tenderness from a parent, shared laughter, kindness shared in a compliment, reassurances from a good mentor, service from a friend, peace in still moments, excitement from accomplishment, joy in discovery- we experience things that ALL reflect aspects of our Father's character. Can a husband and wife be together forever? Do Mormons believe that families will live together in heaven?

Yes! A husband and wife can live together forever. Marriage was ordained of God so that marriage could go beyond the bounds of death. We can do this by following God's commandments and eventually be sealed in His holy temple. This "sealing" is an event (or what is called an "ordinance"), that not only brings the husband and wife together forever, but also their entire family. This means that although children or spouses may pass on before us, we will be able to see them again. The entire purpose of our existence here on Earth is to be united in eternal families- so we can live together in heaven forever. This is because families can bring about the greatest joy we can experience! We recognize that this is a gift from Heavenly Father- and He wants it for us. Show more Show less

How are modesty and chastity related? How can parents teach their children to be modest in dress, language and behavior?

God has taught as that our bodies are meant to be special, even sacred, like temples. They are a gift to us from Him. Modesty is a way that we show respect for our bodies and it reminds us that they are meant to be used according to God's laws if we are to be happy. When we dress modestly, it tells those around us that there is more to us than just physical appearance- that we are a special soul. People will likely assume that we are lax about how we use our bodies when we are lax about how we display ourselves. Encourage youth to decide on how they want people to perceive them, and teach them that it directly relates to their dress and appearance. Help them find a role model that has dressed modestly and has achieved great things in their lives. Often, youth dress and act immodestly because they both want to be accepted and stand out. Help them understand that they can become a unique role model to others through modest dress and gain respect by being an example. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons perform baptisms for the dead?

We believe that God loves all of his children, past and present, and He wants all of them to receive all of the promised blessings of eternal life. Receiving those blessings requires making commitments to God that show that we can live and obey His laws. One of the ways that we show our commitment and obedience to God is through baptism. Ever since Christ showed us the way of baptism (by immersion) in his lifetime, He taught us that each of us must be baptized if we want to gain exaltation. For those who were not taught this principle while they lived on Earth, they did not have the opportunity to get baptized while alive. However, God has revealed to His prophets that those who have passed on are being taught the gospel of Jesus Christ, and many wish to receive the blessings of exaltation, starting with baptism and receiving the Holy Ghost. As an act of service to the dead, we go to represent them by proxy in our holy temples so they have an opportunity to be baptized and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Each man and woman on the other side of the veil who has had this service provided for them can either accept it or reject it. Show more Show less

How can I find someone to talk with, in person, about the Mormon religion?

One of the best ways to learn the basic principles of our religion is by checking resources like this website, chatting with the missionaries, and have them send you some resources (like a Book of Mormon, videos, etc.) and then try finding the closest LDS chapel in your area by looking in the phone book or online. They can have missionaries come to your home and teach you if you wish. Another good way is to go to church with a friend or an acquaintance of yours who is LDS, and they can also connect you with the missionaries. If you don't have any of those resources nearby, chat with the missionaries and they will find a way to have someone connect with you. There are probably more Mormons around you than you think.
