Hi I'm Joanne

I'm a Mormon; my family came across the plains in 1952 in a Pontiac convertible.

About Me

I live in with my husband, and we are empty nesters. I love to paint, and my favorite is to paint murals. We have six children and two daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law, and 9 1/3 grandchildren. I have about 3 years of college. We have been married for 39 years. I love my husband very much. I was born in Michigan, then our family moved to California. Since our marriage we have lived in California, Utah, Texas and England. Although our grandchildren live in California, we are able to visit them often. I have been to California five times since last November.

Why I am a Mormon

I am so thankful to be able to share my conversion story. When I was young a neighbor asked my mom if myself and my brothers and sisters would be able to attend their Sunday School at the Church of the Nazarene in South Pasadena, California. I remember learning about Jesus and his life. Also we learned about the apostles. I attended the Christian Science church with my grandparents a few times, and also as the years went on I had friends who were Catholic and I attended that church. When John F. Kennedy died I was going to Pasadena City College. I went to the Catholic church across the street from the school. That began a search for me to find a church. I attended several different ones. My sister had a friend, and I told her what I was doing. She belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I really admired her. She was very friendly, she had a clean wholesome appearance, and a very happy countenance. She asked me if I wanted to take lessons from the missionaries of her church. My parents did not want me to have the lessons at their house. She invited me to have them at her family home. I remember when the missionaries talked about the gospel being restored and that it was on a foundation of apostles and prophets. I remembered learning about the Church when Jesus was on the earth and had apostles, and I felt that in my heart. I also noticed more the order of living things on the earth. I wish that I had joined then, but a year and a half later the same sister and her friend asked me if I would go on a blind date with her brother. I am pretty sure I didn't know she had a brother, but it sounded good to me. He came over the next night and took me to Disneyland with another couple. My life was beginning to feel wonderful. We dated a lot that summer. I was so happy. He took me to church activities and to his familiy's home, and I got to know them all better. I felt so much love from the members, and his family. I asked him if I could take the lessons again. He helped with the teaching of the lessons. One night they asked if we could kneel and pray, it suddenly came over me as we were kneeling that the Church is true. I knew from then on that it was all true. I felt the Spirit come over my whole being. The friend's brother is my husband now. He is a wonderful member of the Church, and I am so grateful for him. After that I felt so changed. It was like coming from darkness in to light. I guess it showed, because two sisters and a brother joined the Church also in the next few years. It is the best thing that I have ever done. I testify with all my heart that the Church is true, the Book of Mormon is true. I have been reading it every day since 1987, except for few exceptions. It has helped me so much. I love the power, the love, peace, and Spirit that I feel when I study it. It has truly helped me to stay on the straight and narrow. Because of the Book of Mormon I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet. I know that Thomas S. Monson is a prophet of God today. I love being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. It has blessed my life more than I even know. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

How I live my faith

I get to serve with my husband in Scouting. We teach them together in Sunday School. I am really enjoying the study of the Old Testament. We meet during the week for their activities. I serve at the Mission Training Center at least eight hours a week. I love helping the missionaries prepare to go on their missions. I am in the Spanish section. I also enjoy very much visiting with two women that belong to our ward. I go with another woman. We take a short message to each one, visit, see if we can help her if she's having difficulties, and enjoy her families good news. This sevices fills my life with happiness.

What blessings can we receive through the gift of the Holy Ghost?

We can receive guidance. Today I prayed to be worthy to have the Holy Ghost, recognize it's promptings, and do what it said. After that I was at the bathroom sink, and I had a feeling about a book store that sells our church books. I wondered why I thought about it, and prayed what to do. I thought about going down to the store, but went on the website. I remembered it was my sister's birthday in three days and was trying to pick out something. I couldn't decide. Then all of a sudden my phone rang, and it was my sister! She wanted to visit on Skype. She talked, and talked, and then got very excited about some music that she and her husband were writing. It was my answer. When we were done I went back to the website, and found a Cd perfectly suited to her. It was a peaceful feeling and great help to me. I know God helps us through the Holy Ghost. What do Mormons believe about the Holy Ghost? Who is the Holy Ghost?

We believe that the Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead. He doesn't have a body, but his power helps to teach us, comfort and guide, and very importantly testify to our hearts of truth. The Holy Ghost testifies to me that Jesus is the Christ, Heavenly Father hears and answers our prayers and loves me, the Book of Mormon is true and that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the only true church. What is the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon contains wonderful stories of courage of those people who lived then in America. They knew also that Jesus would visit them It also contains some of the writings of Isaiah, because they also studied his words and prophecies. It has only been translated by Joseph Smith, and the writings are very clear and easy to understand. It has not had things taken out of it as the Bible did. A very important message of the Book of Mormon is that pride can bring the downfall of people and that we need to remember to be humble and follow the teachings of Jesus Show more Show less
