Hi I'm Ryan

I'm a Texan. A scientist. A Mormon.

About Me

I love to learn. I love to teach. I see this evidenced in all I do as a father, husband, community member and professional. The day I held my oldest daughter for the very first time, I loved her with unexpected suddenness and intensity. Being a parent has completely redefined my relationship with God. Now, my wife, our three kids & I daily have magical moments together.

Why I am a Mormon

Despite being reared LDS, I came to believe that God was extremely critical of me. I felt I could not live up to his expectations and lost much of my self-worth. However, in The Book of Mormon, I discovered • my "nothingness" is not a comparison to His power, but to His goodness (Mosiah 4:5). • God has "turned away [His] judgments because of [His] Son" (Alma 33:13). • though I have rebelled against God, I can be saved by faith in Christ and repentance (Mosiah 3:12). Now I am confident in God's love for me. As a parent, I've seen my kids can never do anything to disqualify themselves from my love. I love them because of who they are, not what they do. I now rejoice that God is not just my Creator, but my Father.

How I live my faith

Every day I try to connect with Christ in a sincere and heartfelt way. Currently, my wife and I read the Book of Mormon each morning before our kids get up. I've rediscovered how exciting this book is and just how much it has to teach me about God. Additionally, I've found it vital to talk to someone each day about my connection with God. I usually share what I'm feeling and why I may be stressed, but in this process I find anew that He loves me. At church, I work with the 14 & 15 year-old Boy Scouts. I love working with the youth because the Gospel is so new to them. They're discovering just who Jesus Christ is and how He can help them.

Are Mormons Christians?

To most Mormons, this is a ridiculous question. However, I think when most people ask this, they are actually asking “Are Mormons Protestant?” or “Are Mormons Catholic?” The answer to each of these questions is clearly “No.” While these questions may seem obvious, I would expand the real question further, “Do Mormons believe in the same type of Christ as Catholics/Protestants?” My answer is “Yes and no.” We believe a lot of similar things: • Jesus’ birth to the virgin Mary was miraculous. • Jesus is the only begotton Son of God. • Jesus atoned for my sins, was crucified and then resurrected. • Jesus’ life and teaching are recorded in the Bible. But we also believe some different things: • Jesus is a separate person from God the Father, both of whom have physical bodies. • Jesus, Satan and all people are literal spirit chrildren of God. • Jesus made it possible for me to become like God in his fulness. • The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ. For some, being Christian is defined by the differences, most particularly a belief in the Trinity. For me, the defining beliefs are the things we have in common, that Jesus is divine, the Son of God and my Savior. So yes, Mormons are Christians, but I can see why you’re asking. Show more Show less
