Hi I'm Philip

I am a basketball coach for 7-9 year olds and a medical student. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I am in medical school and am married with two kids, a 2 year old son and a 7 month old daughter. I enjoy coaching basketball for 7-9 year olds at the neighborhood community center. Playing sports, wrestling my kids, and running are what I do to stay active and healthy.

Why I am a Mormon

Being Mormon brings fulfilment and joy to my life. As I follow the teachings of the Church I am a better husband, father, friend, neighbor and student.

How I live my faith

To me my faith is the most important aspect of my life. I believe that I have more potential to contribute to my society through living my faith than by participation in any other organization or activity. My faith affects everything I do.

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

Philip
It is a law of health that God revealed through our Prophet, Joseph Smith. It sets forth guidelines such as eating healthy and avoiding alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and illegal drugs. We have the promise that if we follow this law that we will receive "health in (our) navel... find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge... shall run and not be weary and shall walk and not faint... (and) that the destroying angel shall pass by (us)". In my career as a nursing and medical student I have seen how following the Word of Wisdom has prevented many health and social problems. Why is self-reliance important to Mormons? Why do Mormons talk about emergency preparedness?

Philip
One reason we believe self-reliance and emergency preparedness to be so important is because we believe we have a duty to serve all people. If we are not self-reliant we are less able to help others. Similarly, if we are prepared for emergencies we will be able to spend our time and efforts helping others instead of trying to help ourselves. Show more Show less

Can a husband and wife be together forever? Do Mormons believe that families will live together in heaven?

Philip
Yes, I believe I will be together with my wife forever. This is made possible through sacred ordinances in our holy temples where we covenant with God and eachother to live righteously. I also believe I will be together with my family in heaven if I am faithful to this marriage covenant. Show more Show less

What is the First Vision?

Philip
The First Vision is a vision that Joseph Smith received in answer to a sincere prayer to know which Church he should join. In this vision God the Father and Jesus Christ appeared to him in bodily form. They instructed him not to join any Church but to restore to earth the Church of Jesus Christ which Christ set up while He was on the earth but was taken from the earth when all of the Apostles died. From this vision Joseph Smith learned many important things about God and our relationship to Him. One, He has a body of flesh and bone in the form of a man and that we are literally created after His image. Two, He loves us and answers our heartfelt prayers. Three, He still communicates with man on Earth as He did with Moses, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. These truths have changed how I feel about God, how I feel about myself, and how I feel about religion.
