Hi I'm Mat

I'm a professor, a lover of learning, and outdoors person, a dad, and a Mormon

About Me

I'm a person who enjoys life. I feel blessed to have a wonderful wife and family. I love spending time with my family, especially time outside. My wife and I do our best to encourage our kids to spend time outside whether that's in the backyard or on family camping trips. I love being outside, laughing with my kids, cooking, traveling, bike commuting, dating my wife, reading, watching good movies, wood working, college sports, and learning new things. Professionally I am a University Professor and I study adolescents. More specifically, I try to understand how they spend their free time and what types of opportunities and experiences they need to become successful adults. My faith in Jesus Christ is central to everything. It's the source of direction, peace, happiness, and purpose. I am so grateful for a faith that helps me understand my purpose in this life and my relationship with God and Jesus Christ.

Why I am a Mormon

I'm a Mormon for many reasons. Most importantly I am because I know it's true. I know this in part because I feel it in my heart and also because when I intentionally live the principles, the gospel of Jesus Christ, of the Church I am happy. Not just I ate a really tasty donut happy but the I woke up early and climbed to the top of this mountain to watch a spectacular sunrise happy. What each of us believes is a very personal matter. We have to find out what we believe. Although I grew up in the church I realized as I grew older that I could not always rely on the faith of my parents. I found over time that my witness of the truthfulness of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint grew out of the recognition that living the principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ brought me the greatest happiness. As I did my best to follow Christ I came to know Him and understand His love for me. I also prayed to know if the Book of Mormon was true and if Joseph Smith had been called of God to be a prophet and restore His church. I have felt a peaceful assurance of the truthfulness of these things. As a missionary I shared my witness of these truths to the people of Germany for two years and felt the Spirit of God bear witness of my words as I taught His gospel. God loves each of us and He wants us to come to personally know Him which we all can if we approach Him prayer. I have and I know He loves me and that this is his church, and that's why I am a Mormon.

How I live my faith

My faith is an integral part of my life. Outwardly I attend church on Sunday's where I work with the youth program. This involves teaching Sunday School lessons and also participating in a weekly youth night. My responsibilities also include assisting with our congregations Boy Scout troop which if a lot of fun. As a Mormon I also travel to the Houston Temple once a month. In the temple Mormon's make sacred covenants with guide that provide direction to our discipleship. In the temple we are also married as husband and wife for not only time but also eternity. I love the Temple as it reminds me that I can live together with my family forever. Other outwardly actions of my faith include living our health code, the Word of Wisdom, which includes avoiding tea, coffee, alcohol, tobacco and other harmful drugs while also eating healthy things like grains, fruits, and vegetables. Inwardly, my thoughts and attitudes are influence constantly by my faith in Jesus Christ. While I am far from perfect I do my best to follow Christ's example in thought, word, and action. I love the fact that I can have a prayer in my heart to God as I got about my day. I know that he is my Heavenly Father and is always ready for me to share my thoughts, concerns, and gratitude with Him. I know he hears my prayers and provides direction when I ask Him. This doesn't mean He immediately answers all prayers but I know He's listening and providing counsel when I'm willing to listen and He deems it necessary.
