Hi I'm Steve

About Me

I grew up mostly in Alabama and have lived in the South most of my life. I am married to a beautiful woman whom I met at BYU. We've been married for more than 28 years and have four kids. My oldest is now serving as a missionary for the church. When I was my son's age, I served as a missionary in Belgium where I learned to speak Dutch. I can speak "nog een klein beetje". In the summers I try to find time to take the family to the lake. I'm a water-skiier and the kids, unfortunately, are wakeboarders. I'm a do-it-yourselfer and almost always have some project or another that I am doing, or that needs to be done around the house. I am usually shuffling kids to soccer, cross-country, dance or some other activity. Last but not least, I love to sing. I don't have a great voice, but I love being a part of the church choir.

Why I am a Mormon

I grew up as a member of the Church. I had ancestors that came across the plains with the Mormon Pioneers. One thing becomes clear, however, that if you are going to be actively involved in the Church there is a significant commitment needed. You need to have more of a foundation than "because my parents are Mormon". I have remained a member because of many reasons--feelings I have had when I prayed about whether the Book of Mormon was true, feelings I have had when I read the scriptures, and the continuing blessings I see in my life when I live the principles taught by living prophets and apostles. I have a peace knowing what I am expected to do. I know that when you live the gospel, it brings happiness. It all makes sense to me. As a civil engineer, I like logical things. A lot of things in religion are ultimately a function of faith, but there are so many intertwining parts of the gospel that support and reinforce that faith, that it all just makes sense. It's so obvious that sometimes it is frustrating to me that I can't express it better so that everyone would know it too.

How I live my faith

I have served in a variety of positions in my local congregation. I have acted as a clerk, worked with young men in scouting and Sunday instruction. The most significant responsibility I have is leading my family. I try to be there for them as much as I can and I try to be sure that I am teaching my kids sound principles.

Are Mormons Christians?

This is one that baffles me! All you have to do is read the Book of Mormon to answer that question. If you don't have time for that, try 2 Nephi Chapter 31 in the Book of Mormon. If that doesn't convince you, what is the full name of the Church? The first few statements of belief (the Articles of Faith) of the church state our belief in Jesus Christ. If you don't believe what is written, go to a meetinghouse and see what is taught on Sunday. I can promise you, you will hear testimony of our belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and our belief in him as our Savior. Show more Show less
