Hi I'm Pat

I'm involved in scouts and I blog about food and technology. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a husband and father of two. I love to hike, camp, read, garden, and cook - especially with my family. I work with computers and the internet for a living, and I volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America.

Why I am a Mormon

While I first discovered the church as a child, I was 8 years old when a friend invited me to come to church with him, I didn't really look at it seriously until I was an adult. At 21, I'd been looking at a variety of organized religions for several years and had almost given up hope of finding the answers I was looking for. That's when I was invited to meet with the missionaries to learn more about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As we talked, I found answers to questions that had bothered me: What happens to families after we die? What happens to people who never heard about Jesus Christ because of when or where they were born? Even more important than finding the answers I was seeking, I felt the Spirit, the Holy Ghost, as I met with the missionaries. I received a personal witness that went far beyond any intellectual agreement with what I'd learned. I've come to rely on that spiritual confirmation, that testimony. It has been an anchor for me in the 20+ years since I joined the LDS Church. I continue to feel the Holy Ghost confirming the truth of the gospel to me today, and I can't imagine going back to living without it.

How I live my faith

I'm especially blessed to be able to act on my faith professionally. I work for the Family Search organization, helping support and improve the tools and information available to family history enthusiasts around the world. I also volunteer in the Boy Scouts, helping individual units provide a better program for their youth. It's great to see these young men learning to succeed in so many things, often things they never thought they could do.

Are Mormons Christians?

I've frequently run into people who don't believe that Mormons are Christian. This often seems like it's based on some exclusionary definition, coupled with misinformation about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Once people get to know a few practicing Mormons, I think they'll see that we certainly are Christian. To my mind, being a Christian means having faith in Jesus Christ, believing His promise of eternal life and salvation, and acting as He would have you act. I hope that I live and act in such a way that leaves no question in people's mind that I'm a Christian. Show more Show less
