Hi I'm Lane

I am an investigative reporter. I'm a college professor. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I have four kids and a wonderful wife. I grew up in a home with a single mom because my dad died when I was young. I have been able to achieve my dreams because of kind people around me. I love journalism. I teach at a universityI study the media and have been a reporter. I have been a proud member of Investigative Reporters & Editors and other journalism organizations. I love hiking in Yellowstone and writing and science fiction. But I am happiest when I am with my family.

Why I am a Mormon

There is only one answer. It is true. My belief centers on my love of The Book of Mormon, which I have prayed about, read scores of times and, I say this with seriousness, I have felt personal revelation confirming its truth. When I read it, I find answers. I feel better. There is more peace in my home. It is a miracle for a world that needs one. I have spent the last few years working on a dissertation about the media coverage of my Mormon belief. This has immersed me in the scholarship of my faith by those who sometimes share it and sometimes don't. The point? As I have read those materials, I have found more and more and more reason to see the Book of Mormon as a marvel. Nothing like it exists in the world. It has insights on modern problems. It feels prophetic and relevant. I would invite anyone who reads this to consider the implications of this miracle book If the Book of Mormon is true, and I witness that it is, then prophets like Moses and Enoch and Elijah walk the earth again, then families can be forever, then angels are visiting the earth, then there is purpose to life and life after death. It means there is great reason to have hope. I am not a Mormon for social reasons or for fun, though it has filled those needs for me. I am a Mormon because the Book of Mormon is true and that knowledge has provided hope and meaning and purpose for me.

How I live my faith

I serve as a scouter and a home teacher. I help boys get their Eagle Scouts as troop committee chairman, and I visit four members of my ward each month, giving them lessons on faith. I contribute 10 percent of my income to support the efforts of my church. I served a mission to Japan that changed my life. I try to read my scriptures each day and pray. The experiences I have had with my faith are the most precious of my life. I wouldn't have the family or joy I do without it.

Why are only some Mormons allowed into temples? Is there something secret going on in Mormon Temples? What goes on in Mormon Temples?

We believe that temples are sacred, not secret. We treat our covenants with respect. Temples help me feel closer to God and to find more peace and find answers to problems troubling me. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about the nature of God?

He is the father of my spirit. God is our friend. He hears and answers personal prayers. He is loving and acts according to eternal principles, not arbitrariness. He respects our personal agency and choice. His full purpose is to help us have joy and life more abundantly in this world and the next. He created the world and its beauty for us.  Show more Show less

What is the Book of Mormon?

It is an ancient witness of the divinity of God and of his son Jesus Christ, translated by miraculous means by a modern prophet. It has answers to life's questions and provides much hope for a better life. Show more Show less

Why do you have 12 Apostles? They were just meant to be around for the time of Jesus Christ, not to be replaced with new apostles.

If apostles were needed to witness of Christ in the time of the Romans, aren't they more necessary now in a time of nuclear weapons and terror? God loves us today, so he provides apostles today. Show more Show less

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

Yes. Moses was just a man who was given powerful authority and responsibility. Thomas Monson is just a man, but he too has been given powerful authority. He is a good and decent man who has spent his life helping widows and orphans and acting to help his fellow man. Show more Show less
