Hi I'm Hugh

I prayed to find the true Church of Jesus Christ when I was 23 years old. Now, I've been a Mormon for over 26 years.

About Me

Originally from Chicago, I enjoyed childhood memories of playing in the snow, rooting for the Chicago Cubs and going skiing with my family. Occasionally we would attend church, it was right across the street. My father ran a successful advertising agency. He would often kneel beside my bed at night, and recite the Lord's prayer. Later, times got hard and the family moved from Chicago to Phoenix, Arizona. What a change! Being only 9 years old, I really didn't want to go. But, I didn't have much of a choice! As time passed, I grew to love Arizona. I still consider it my home away from home. I lived in Phoenix, attended Central High School and then later, Northern Arizona University, in Flagstaff. We attended a Baptist church which was near our house, since the pastor shared my mother's maiden name. Later, my sister would take me to another Baptist church which seemed to be so full of energy. Then in college I attended a Lutheran church. Despite these few introductions to a variety organized religions, I never felt fully satisfied. I yearned for more, not really knowing where to find it.

Why I am a Mormon

After graduating from college, I felt an intense desire to find myself in a spiritual way. I meditated, prayed and listened to a lot of different people. Some of these people did everything they could to prevent me from choosing the right path. At one point, I became so confused, I had forgotten I was even a believing Christian! On one of my trips to San Diego, I stopped off to see my sister who lived in Tucson, Arizona at the time. She reminded me of a scripture in Proverbs 3:5 and 6 which reads: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own dunderstanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." My path to the Church began to appear before me as I read the Bible, alone in my apartment. This was not an easy thing to do since I shared the apartment with 5 other recently graduated college buddies! Nevertheless, the more I prayed, the more I felt that really all I wanted to do was stay home and read the Bible. After I had moved to San Diego, I had stopped attending church. I was frustrated with all organized religion. I even felt like I never wanted to join another church ever again. It was during this period of my life, that I began to earnestly read the Bible. I read many things about the restoration of the Israel, the need for a Savior and more importantly, I wanted to know how I could take advantage of the atoning sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. I visited a friend's home with whom I worked. There on her bookshelf was a book entitled Jesus and his Apostles. I wanted to know more about Jesus. I didn't want to involve myself with another church so I just decided to learn more about the Saviour. I asked her if it was ok to borrow this book. She agreed and also let me borrow another book, written by an apostle, called Mormon Doctrine.

How I live my faith

My wife and I have 4 beautiful children. She is from Mexico so we enjoy speaking Spanish at home. We both served a mission. She served in Mexico, I served in Argentina. We have lot's of fun when we invite missionaries over for dinner. She and I hope to serve a mission together someday and relive some of those memories that we had when we were just a little younger!
