Hi I'm Peter

I love to sing, I love Jesus Christ, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm a 24-year-old college student. I'm majoring in history, and I plan on going to law school. I currently work in a dentist's office where I take care of letters, computers, and other small things around the office. I'm engaged to the woman of better than my dreams, and I love experiencing everything with her. I enjoy being with friends and family, and I love nature and music, especially singing.

Why I am a Mormon

Even though I was born in the church, I had to make up my own mind about staying in it. I can still remember one particularly difficult night that I needed to find some comfort, so I read a chapter in the Book of Mormon. After reading something that really touched me, I decided that I needed to know, independent of what anyone else told me, whether the Book of Mormon was really from God. I had always been taught that if I prayed with faith and sincerity, I would receive an answer. Although I had always believed it to be true, that night I learned for myself that the Book of Mormon was indeed true scripture. Since that night, I have continued to learn more about the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and I have seen tremendous blessings in my life that I know have been the results of living what I know to be good and true. I have had many trials, but I have been lifted up by God and the people He works through on numerous occasions. I would not be where I am today if not for my faith in Jesus Christ. I have experienced countless blessings from living my faith, and that is why I am a Mormon.

How I live my faith

I love to participate in the Church. I serve as a home teacher, or in other words, I get to visit multiple people once a month to share a spiritual message with them. I also try to keep up to date with important happenings in their lives. I try to act like the Savior as I go throughout my daily life, and I find strength as I turn to the Lord for guidance and comfort. Reading the scriptures and praying bring me closer to the Lord, and being around good friends helps me to become a better person.

Why did your church previously practice plural marriage (polygamy)?

Peter
There are many possible reasons, and many people will try to explain away what happened, but what we really know is actually quite simple. God commanded his prophets to establish the practice of polygamy in a select number of families for a rather short span of time. This was difficult to accept for many involved, including Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, but they obeyed nonetheless. Eventually the Lord commanded, once more through a prophet, that the practice be stopped. This also could have been due to a variety of reasons, some of which are given in an official church statement from the prophet at the time, but it is enough for me to know that God stopped it, just as he had started it. The only real question one need ask is whether there is a prophet called of God on the earth today. If there is, and was, then polygamy was indeed a commandment, and it is no longer required, just as God has required different things of His children in the past. The only way to know this for yourself is to study and pray. To be completely clear, no member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is permitted to practice polygamy today. Who was Joseph Smith?

Peter
Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, just like Moses or Abraham. A prophet is chosen by God and given authority to teach the people God's will. Joseph grew up in upstate New York in the early 1800s. He was raised in a religious family, but he wanted to know which church was correct. After being unable to tell who was correct from study alone, he read a verse in the Book of James in the Bible that says, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not and it shall be given him." In other words, if you don't know something, pray and ask God, who gives generously and won't scold you for not knowing, and He will answer you. This touched Joseph deeply, so he decided to pray to know what church he should join. It was then that an amazing thing happened—Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, visited Joseph. They told him that none of the churches were correct, and that he was to be a part of restoring Christ's true church to the earth. Over the years, Joseph received more heavenly communication, and he helped restore Jesus Christ's church in its fullness. Part of this restoration was the priesthood, which is God's authority to act in His name to perform things like baptism and blessings. Joseph was also led to an ancient record written by prophets, which he translated by the gift of God. We know it today as The Book of Mormon. Show more Show less
