Hi I'm Olivia

I'm a new mother, a designer, and I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I'm the oldest of seven kids, so I'm bossy and I like things my way! My dad is from Guatemala and my mom is from California. I love watching my toddler explore all day, but I have to really convince my pregnant self to get up and clean his messes. Some days I get to design wedding announcements, logos, or other projects while he naps. I got a BFA in Graphic Design. College was TOUGH for me, but I learned a lot even apart from the all-nighters and tests. I got to perform multicultural dances, play on soccer teams, and travel to Hawaii, Indian Reservations, NYC, England, Berlin, Prague, and Seoul. I also took a break from school for a couple years to serve a mission for the Church in the DR. I loved my time with the Dominicans! I'm married to my high school sweetheart, who is a Master's of Landscape Architecture student at NC State University. We enjoy documentaries, greek yogurt, and making our son laugh. We rent a tiny apartment on the property of a daylily farm—which provides a lovely view, but too many cockroaches!

Why I am a Mormon

LOVE. I believe it's all about love—particularly God's perfect love. I love the way I feel when I pray, when I serve, when I attend Church and learn about His Gospel. I consider this feeling to be the divine love of my Heavenly Father. I believe God sent His Son to organize His Church on the earth, and to suffer for us that we might be forgiven. I know that same Church organization has been restored to the earth to help His children obtain our primary purpose—to be perfected (Ephesians 4:12). Along with the infinite Atonement, this is Heavenly Father's plan for everyone, because He loves us. And I am involved because I love Him.

How I live my faith

I do my best to follow Christ's example of service. Not only because it is a commandment, but also because it is my best anti-depressant! I have an assignment right now with visiting teaching—a program centered on the service of women to other women. This gives me plenty of options of exactly how to serve. I also get to hear about others' positive experiences and help report the well-being of everyone to the Bishop. I have learned that the most important thing is to pray as we serve so that the Lord can guide us to the best means of service for each of His children.

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

We love those who are homosexual, but we do believe homosexual behavior and same-sex marriage is against God's eternal law. It is contrary to eternal principles that were true in antiquity (Leviticus 20:13) and are true in these latter days (The Family: A Proclamation to the World). Gordon B. Hinckley, a latter-day prophet of God, commented, regarding same-sex marriage in 1998, "To permit such would be to make light of the very serious and sacred foundation of God-sanctioned marriage and its very purpose, the rearing of families." I consider this one of the toughest doctrines in these latter days. In our current culture, it can seem so un-Christian to refuse a lawful marriage between two people who love each other. I believe homosexuals are entitled to their own decisions and their own happiness, but I am certain that marriage and family is eternal; that God defined it by creating man and woman, and that this is His law, even if it has become unpopular.
