Hi I'm Ilkka

I'm a scientist from Finland. I am also a Mormon.

About Me

I am married and a father of four. I work as a space scientist and I have a PhD in theoretical physics. I enjoy science fiction and learning about scientific discoveries also outside my field. I like helping out in my community, volunteering and being active. Playing board games with friends and family is my favorite past time activity.

Why I am a Mormon

My parents were first contacted by missionaries of the church a few months before I was born - they joined the church after I was born. What I felt special about growing in a family who are Mormons was that I was taught about the purpose life and that I was a child of God. Also that there were answers to many other questions about life and God's plan for us. I believed those teachings, and that faith gave me peace and comfort and answers to questions that would have been very perplexing otherwise. Many of the teachings of the gospel made stand out as a teen, things like going to church every Sunday, not using swear words and avoiding tobacco, liquor and coffee. I did feel good about making those choices. Reading the scriptures on my own and praying gave me a strong personal feeling that the teachings of the church were true, and that inner conviction has only grown stronger as I have continued on that path: going on a mission for the church, marrying another member of the church and now raising children and teaching them the things I learned when growing up. It seems hard to think what life would be without the sure knowledge I feel in my heart about my purpose here on Earth and knowing that God hears my prayers and helps my family. I love the gospel and we are trying to find ways to share that with others, if they are interested.

How I live my faith

Reading the holy scriptures and praying daily is one of the most important ways for me to practice my faith. There is much power that I gain from doing that - it strengthens my resolve to do the right thing no matter the circumstance. And it gives great purpose to the things we do in our daily lives - what I teach to my children today will have consequences in their precious lives and eventually in the eternities. I am very glad that we have the blessing of serving in callings in our congregation and in the church. One calling that taught me much was being a teacher to a Sunday school class to a small group of teenagers. I do enjoy sharing my faith through teaching the gospel as it gives me many new insights. Especially the faith-promoting responces that the students give make it all the more enjoyable. It is great to be a part of a congregation where I and my family have many friends. Our children enjoy learning the gospel in the church classes for children and also at home; we have Monday evenings set a side for family time when we play, sing and have discussions or a lesson on gospel topics. The temples of the church with their beauty, like the one in San Antonio, remind me of the promises God has given to us through baptism and our sealing as an eternal family. Thus they symbolize to me the path that I am on leading to the presence of God and to greater happiness together with my family.

What are some things that tell to you there is a God?

I was taught about personal God from my childhood on. I believed that since it gave purpose to life and meaning to every good deed. My own solid conviction of the reality of God has come through immediate answers to prayers in great distress as well as through guidance and protection and comfort from the Spirit of God that is the Holy Ghost. Specific guidance and inspiration has come to me as I have sough it from God when faced with a major decision. Throughout my life I have seen many blessings come to me as I have followed the teachings of Jesus Christ given in the scriptures and taught by inspired church leaders. Knowing that God does love me and answers prayers and gives direction makes me happy, confident and very optimistic about the future. Show more Show less
