Hi I'm Gideon

It's a good life as a Latter-day Saint!

About Me

My wife and I live in Springville, Utah with our family of four boys. I'm a college teacher and enjoy researching and writing about literature and about the new media. I enjoy reading, backyard astronomy, and making Indian food.

Why I am a Mormon

Although I come from a long line of Latter-day Saints (unlike my wife, who converted at 19), I continue to choose the path of this faith because living its principles brings our family true joy. God requires a lot of us who have made promises to follow Him, but I know the standards we keep and the direction we follow keeps us safe, independent, and resilient. Mostly I am a Mormon because I have had repeated and frequent feelings of peace when I follow God's plan as revealed to modern day prophets. I have an unshakeable belief that the men and women who lead this church are called of God. I never feel that God is far from me when I am immersed in His word and in serving others -- especially my wife and children.

How I live my faith

I've been serving as a bishop in my ward the last five years and was just released from this calling. Being a bishop gave me a great opportunity to help organize assistance to those in need in our neighborhood. I also participated with leaders of the men's and women's organizations in planning Sabbath and weekday events to strengthen one another. I also spent many hours counseling people on spiritual, marital, and other practical matters. All of this took a lot of time and effort, but I felt so blessed to be able to see people really reaching for their faith in times of trouble and regularly looking after the needs of those around us. Our greatest accomplishment has been raising our sons to be good men. Our oldest just returned from serving a mission in Kenya, and our second just left for the Mexico, Monterrey East Mission.

What are some things that tell to you there is a God?

I see the divine in my brothers and sisters with whom I live and serve. I know we are God's children because I sense the enormous potential within my family, my neighbors, and friends. Like so many others, I also know the love of our Creator while appreciating the incredible complexity and beauty of the natural world. I feel a great reverence and gratitude for being a witness to God's handiwork. Show more Show less
