Hi I'm Kathy

About Me

I'm a 50-something wife and mother of five children, one a teenager with autism. I also have a beautiful daughter-in-law and an adorable grandson. I grew up in California where my dad was a C.P.A. and my mom was a school teacher. They both joined the Mormon Church as young adults. I've been a Mormon since I was eight years old. I worked professionally as a school psychologist before my children were born. I raise chickens with the help of my autistic daughter (age 19). I love animals, family history, knitting, reading, and being a mom. I have some health issues that limit my physical activity, including fibromylalgia, joint replacement, and depression, but life is still good. My husband and I enjoy helping with the local Special Needs Hockey Team, and volunteering with many neighborhood and church activities.

Why I am a Mormon

I belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the Mormon church because I know it has the authority from Jesus Christ Himself to act in His Name on the earth today. I spent 18 months serving a mission at age 21 so I could share this testimony with others. I have found prayer and personal revelation to be the way to find answers about the true teachings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I also am very grateful to know we have a living prophet on earth today, President Thomas S. Monson (see Amos 3:7). The priesthood power that was lost after the Savior left has been restored again through the Prophet Joseph Smith. The Book of Mormon is a true record, like the Bible, of ancient people who also had prophets and apostles and were loved by Heavenly Father. You can find this out for yourself by reading it and praying about it.....just as I did. I know each of us are loved deeply by Jesus and our Heavenly Father. We can each have the gift of the Holy Ghost with us always to guide and comfort us daily in all we do. I find peace and happiness in spite of trials and challenges by trusting in the Savior no matter what.....this isn't always easy.....but it is the only way. (see Proverbs 3:5-6)

How I live my faith

My husband and I teach our family weekly principles of service, scriptures, self-improvement, and personal growth. We spend time daily in family scripture study and family prayer. We try to be good neighbors and visit many nearby to check on their well-being and give encouragement. We serve as record-keepers for our local church organization. We listen to the words of our modern-day apostles and prophets and try to follow their advice and counsel. We are grateful for life and family and daily miracles all around us!

How are modesty and chastity related? How can parents teach their children to be modest in dress, language and behavior?

Modest dress helps men and women be more respectful of the human body and its sacred purpose. Immodest dress encourages low moral values and the devaluation of womanhood and procreation. Parents can teach modesty and respect for parenthood within the bounds of legal marriage by example, discussion before the teenage years, scriptures, personal revelation, and the words of our modern-day prophets and leaders. What is the First Vision?

The First Vison was the experience Joseph Smith had as a fourteen-year-old boy in 1820 when he decided to ask God what church he should join. He knelt in prayer in the woods near his home. The Father and the Son appeared to him, telling him that their true church was not on the earth at that time. He was called to be the first prophet on the earth since New Testament times. He was given the original priesthood power of Jesus Christ, which is still on the earth, passed from worthy holders of this sacred power. Show more Show less

Do Mormons practice polygamy?

No. We believe that revelation from God for all of His people will be given through the living prophet. At rare times, the Lord will command something very different for His children to test their faith. Polygamy for a short time is one of those tests the early Saints were given until withdrawn by the Lord through His prophet. Abraham being commanded to sacrifice his son Isaac in the Old Testament was another rare time. Show more Show less

What is the role of the husband and the wife in the family?

Both parents in a family are responsible for the care, teaching, and well-being of their children. Parents are equal partners in reaching this goal. Sometimes one parent will need to help with different needs at different times in the family. Parents should strive for unity and spirituality in all details of raising their family.
