Hi I'm Derek

I am a convert to the church, husband, father of two sons, English teacher, soccer coach, choreographer, and doctoral student.

About Me

I love my life! I currently teach English at a middle school. I love my job! I am married to a wonderful woman and we have been married close to three years now. We have been blessed with a two year old son, who has truly brought tremendous joy to our life. Other than teaching and spending time with my family, I get involved in a number of different activities including reading good books, directing and/or choreographing school productions, as well as playing and coaching soccer.

Why I am a Mormon

There is so much which is involved in my spiritual conversion to Christ, but I will state it simply. I had some amazing friends who led me to some great missionaries, who opened my mind and heart to hear about the gospel of Jesus Christ. Through listening to the principles of the gospel as they were taught to me by these two young men, I came to realize that God, our eternal Father, truly does live. I came to realize that the heavens were opened. I also came to realize by an undeniable feeling which came though Holy Ghost, that God and His Son Jesus appeared to a young man named Joseph Smith and called him to be a prophet. By listening to the missionaries teach the principles of the Savior's gospel as restored and revealed to Joseph Smith, I began to believe the truthfulness of the message they shared. I began to better understand the promise the Savior spoke in John 717 that if any man did the will of the Lord that they would know whether the doctrine be of God. I knew that the gospel being taught to at that time was true. I knew it was true by the power of the Holy Ghost which testifies the truth of all things. I knew it then and I still know it today. Through continued prayer, scripture study, and service, I still know firmly in my heart that this is the path the Savior wants me to walk.

How I live my faith

Serving the Lord has brought me the greatest sense of joy and satisfaction to my life. I have served in various different church organizations where I have been able to help share the restored the gospel, including helping those who may be in need, and participating in humanitarian service. I also served a full time mission for two years in Berlin, Germany. I never loved a culture or a people more than I loved my time among the German people. In the past few years since I joined the church, I have really developed a love and a desire to lighten the load of anyone who may be in need. I love to use my talents as a teacher to help share the restored gospel and discuss the principles of our church. I strive everyday to spend my life in the service of other people. For me my faith has given me not only the greatest joy I have ever experienced, but it has also given me a greater sense of purpose.

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Please don't mistake the word worship with honor. We honor Joseph Smith as a man called by God to reveal His will to His children. We worship the Savior, Jesus Christ. If you were to enter my home today you would see pictures of the Savior in most of our rooms, and prayers being offered in His name. You would never see us bowing down to worship one of God's prophets and offering prayers in the name of Joseph Smith. I worship and follow the Savior and honor the prophets he calls to lead His people. I strive to follow the council which the Lord reveals through His prophets such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, and among them Joseph Smith, but I only do so after I pray to the one I worship to seek a personal witness for myself that such men as Moses, Abraham, and Joseph Smith are truly called by God to reveal His will for us.   Show more Show less

How can I know Mormonism is true?

It is a rather simple answer... ask!! Our Heavenly Father hears prayers and he will answer in his own time and in a special way for you to understand. Another simple way is to come and see for yourself and attend church, reading the Book of Mormon, or studying with the missionaries. I promise any of those activities will bring a sweet peaceful feeling into your life.  Show more Show less
