Hi I'm Bruce

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

Hi! I'm the father of 4 children who are all wonderful, and married to a great woman who shares my core values and beliefs. I enjoy hiking, camping, fixing things, genealogy, and even though I do it all day long for my employment, I still enjoy working on computers in my spare time.

Why I am a Mormon

Well at first I didn't have much say - I was born into a Mormon family. But I developed a testimony and know that this is how my Father in Heaven would have me live. I wouldn't want it any other way.

How I live my faith

I try to keep the commandments of God, be kind to others and just be Christ-like. Living your faith happens as much in every small choice you make, as well as the big ones. I serve others in Church, and try to be a good neighbor. Raising my family in the "admonition of the Lord" is also important to me. I see the blessings of the Lord in my life, when I choose to do what I feel is right.

Why do some call Mormonism a cult?

Bruce
I think it's typically because they don't know much about the Church, or view the idea of private temple ceremonies as being somehow cult-like. They should just get to know the members of the Church and that idea will melt away. Show more Show less

What is Mormonism? OR What do Mormons believe?

Bruce
Mormons believe in a loving God who has a plan for their happiness. He desires to be able to give us all He has, but for that to happen, we must come unto Him, repent of our sins and keep the commandments. He has a living prophet to administer His gospel and guide the Church. We believe in a restoration of the precious truths taught by Christ himself, and the holy prophets throughout the ages. This restoration happened through Joseph Smith, beginning in 1820. Show more Show less

Is it true that Jesus appeared in North America after his crucifixion and resurrection according to the Book of Mormon?

Bruce
Yes! He appeared to them and taught them many of the same things as are recorded in the New Testament. Show more Show less

Why is it important for us to take care of our bodies? Why are our bodies called temples of God in the Bible?

Bruce
Our bodies have a whole lot to do with what we can accomplish in this life, so it's important to take care of them so we can make the most of life. Our bodies house our spirits, and if we have the gift of the Holy Ghost, we can have the Holy Ghost abide with us, which in my opinion is one reason why our bodies can be considered temples of God. Show more Show less

To what do you attribute the growth of the Church?

Bruce
Well, the Church tries to do good in the world, and tries to be a light on a hill, as in Christ's parables. As people see that, they are attracted to it and want to associate with it. Show more Show less

Are there restrictions based on race or color concerning who can join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and have the priesthood?

Bruce
No. Show more Show less

Where did Mormonism and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints begin?

Bruce
Fayette, New York Show more Show less

How can faith in Jesus Christ influence us in our marriages and family relationships? in our friendships?

Bruce
Faith in Jesus Christ helps us to do those things which are of most worth in our relationships, and to strive to be our best selves. Show more Show less

How is the Book of Mormon different from the Bible? How did Joseph Smith obtain the “golden plates” or Book of Mormon?

Bruce
The Book of Mormon is scripture similar to the Bible and we use both extensively. They have differing origins however. The Bible comes through records kept by the old world prophets, while the Book of Mormon is from new world prophets ie - the Americas. Before the decline of the ancient nations the prophet Mormon gathered the records on gold plates, and then his son Moroni buried them in the ground. Joseph Smith was told where these records were located, and then translated them by the gift and power of God, and we now have a part of those records in the Book of Mormon. Show more Show less

Why don't Mormons drink coffee, tea, or alcohol? What is the Mormon Church's law of health and proper diet?

Bruce
A revelation called "The Word of Wisdom" is a guide of health and includes the abstaining of tea, coffee, and alcohol. It is a basic commandment which helps us maintain better health. Show more Show less

Bruce
No. At various times throughout the earth's history God has commanded various prophets and other followers to take on more than one wife, but that divinely appointed practice is not in effect now. Show more Show less

What is a “testimony” that Mormons speak of?

Bruce
A testimony is your own personal revelation about an important gospel truth, and it provides strength for you to continue along in the path back to Heavenly Father. It is given by the power of the Holy Ghost to those who are honestly seeking the truth. Show more Show less

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

Bruce
The atonement of Jesus Christ was a wonderful gift to us from both Heavenly Father and Jesus Himself, wherein Jesus overcame the effects of the fall for all mankind, both on an individual level, and on a collective level. This opens the door for us to return to Heavenly Father, conditional upon our repentance and keeping of the commandments. Jesus was perfect, and was the only one of God's children that could pay the price for sin and satisfy the demands of justice, to bring about the great plan of mercy which allows us to be cleansed from our sins. Show more Show less

Why is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints called Mormons or Mormonism?

Bruce
Because in the early days of the Church, the Book of Mormon was prominent in how the missionary work was done (and still is). So the moniker of Mormon started to stick. Show more Show less

Does The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints endorse political parties?

Bruce
The Church reminds us each election season that it is good for its members to be involved in the political process, but that the Church itself does not endorse political parties or individual candidates. Show more Show less

Who was Joseph Smith?

Bruce
Joseph Smith was a good man who was looking for the truth, and had enough faith to get a very special answer from God to his question. God then called him to the work of organizing His church again on the earth. Show more Show less

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

Bruce
They will help you understand what the basics of the Gospel of Jesus Christ are and how and why His Church has been restored through Joseph Smith. Show more Show less

What is faith?

Bruce
Faith is _doing_ things based on our inner convictions. It's where we are tried to see whether we will choose the right. It is not knowing, but pushing the limits of our desires. This is an essential part of our relationship with God. Show more Show less

How can I know Mormonism is true?

Bruce
Ask God - he will tell you if you really ask with faith and a pure desire to know what's right. Pray and he will answer you in your heart, Show more Show less

Are all Mormons required to serve a mission?

Bruce
No. It is a great opportunity for those who are able to do so, and it is usually expected of a young man as he turns 19, but there is no hard and fast rule that this must be so. Show more Show less

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Bruce
Not at all. We worship God the Father. Joseph Smith was a great prophet, but our worshipful devotion is directed to God alone. Show more Show less

What is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' attitude regarding homosexuality and same sex marriage?

Bruce
As I understand it the inclination of sexual attractions towards the same gender is not itself necessarily a sin, but must be carefully guarded against, since it runs counter to the plan of happiness for each of us. Acting on those inclinations, however, is a serious violation of the law of chastity, and is an affront to the most basic aspects of our God given gender identity. The idea of same-sex marriage is also an affront to God, since it completely confuses the proper role of man and woman in how a family should be. Show more Show less

Why are Mormons asked to donate 10% of their income to their Church?

Bruce
There are a few reasons. The main one is "faith". Yes that's right. It tries your faith in a number of ways. And even though God could provide the physical needs of the Church miraculously, it is through the miracle of faith that he accomplishes that. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons baptize their new members?

Bruce
Because that is the ordinance which marks a persons entry into the Kingdom of God on the earth, and demonstrates a persons willingness to follow Christ. Show more Show less

Bruce
By staying far away from its' influence and helping those who have fallen victim to it's evil barbs. Show more Show less

What are Mormon women like? Do Mormons believe in equality of men and women?

Bruce
Mormon women are quite varied, but most are sweet and kind. We certainly believe in equality of men and women, but perhaps not as the world sees it. Each has specific talents and innate abilities pertaining to their gender, and they are encouraged to improve upon their own talents. We don't try to erase the differences between men and women, but rather encourage each to be his/her best self. Show more Show less

What are Mormon church services like? Are visitors allowed at church meetings? Can I attend church?

Bruce
Please do! We welcome people interested in learning about our Church. We worship by partaking of the sacrament, singing hymns, and hearing talks, and participating in lessons on gospel topics. Even though all these meetings together take 3 hours, feel free to just visit the Sacrament Meeting portion, which lasts about an hour. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about family?

Bruce
We believe the family is a very important unit of society, and one which God ordained for us to be nurtured and to provide a place for us to learn the important things of life. If we are worthy, our family can be eternal. Show more Show less

What blessings can you receive from reading the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and other scriptures?

Bruce
As we open our hearts and minds to the Word of God, as recorded in the scriptures, we are more likely to be able to receive insights and inspiration from God as to how His word applies in our lives. Reading regularly keeps us in a more spiritual frame of mind. Show more Show less

What is the purpose of the welfare services of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

What do Mormons believe happens to us after we die? What do Mormons believe about life after death?

Bruce
After we die, our spirits "are taken home to that God who gave them life." This is part of an initial judgment that will assign us to spirit prison or spirit paradise, where we can continue to progress before our own resurrection. The resurrection is part of a more final judgment. Show more Show less

Do you really believe there is a prophet like Moses alive today?

Bruce

What are Mormon Temples used for?

Bruce
They provide a little bit of Heaven on Earth, and as such, are the designated place for the most sacred of the ordinances which Heavenly Father has for us. The temple is also a place of peace and refuge for worthy Church members to be fortified and strengthened. A temple is literally the Lord's House. Show more Show less

Who are the Mormons?

Bruce
The Mormons are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. That's my official answer. If you don't know a Mormon but would like to, I'm sure a missionary would love to talk to you! Show more Show less

Why is self-reliance important to Mormons? Why do Mormons talk about emergency preparedness?

Bruce
Self reliance is just a part of personal responsibility that Mormon's believe in. They don't look to others to fill their needs but work towards being able to do whatever they can to fulfill their own needs. But at the same time, when you are in need, we try not to turn down another's offer to help us (that is sometimes hard for Mormons). Why was a Restoration of the Gospel needed? Haven't we always had the Bible?

Bruce
The bible is wonderful, but God wants us to be guided at all times and in many ways, and his word is not limited to just what's in the bible. When the world was prepared for greater knowledge, God restored pure truths again through Joseph Smith. Show more Show less

In whom should we have faith?

Bruce
Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is the first principle of the Gospel. Our faith should rest squarely in him and none other. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about the Holy Ghost? Who is the Holy Ghost?

Bruce
The Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead, who can reveal God's truths to us. If we are baptized and given the gift of the Holy Ghost, he will guide and assist us, and comfort us throughout our lives, if we remain worthy of his sacred influence. Show more Show less

Bruce
We believe it is by revelation from God, to those who hold the keys of the Kingdom of God on the earth. Show more Show less

Why are only some Mormons allowed into temples? Is there something secret going on in Mormon Temples? What goes on in Mormon Temples?

Bruce
Mormon Temples are sacred places which we consider to be Houses of God, dedicated to His highest purposes for His children here on the earth. Sacred ordinances take place there, and there are rules in place to keep it holy and undefiled as best as we can. Hence, there are standards of worthiness, which do limit who is able to go to the temple. Show more Show less

As far as socializing, we don't drink alcohol, or smoke, we stay away from R rated movies. Many engage in sports and other outdoor activities. Show more Show less

Bruce
It goes to build temples, maintain meeting houses, and support the efforts of the Church to spread the gospel, redeem the dead, and perfect the saints. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe concerning the doctrine of grace?

Bruce
Grace is a wonderful doctrine - it's like the rescue rope that we are thrown from heaven to pull us out of the quicksand of our own sins and of a fallen world. It is the expression of God's love to us. But we need to do our part, like grab on the rope and hold on, and as we get stronger, even more actively participate in our rescue. The concept that grace is arbitrary or that our actions don't matter to me denies the justice of God. Show more Show less

Can you tell me about Mormon customs: how you dress for church, what holidays you celebrate, etc.?

Bruce
We try to dress nice when we go to Church, we enjoy getting together. We certainly celebrate holidays, especially Christmas. Mormons are mostly quite patriotic as well. They enjoy doing things as families. Growing up, scouting and girl's camp are a part of our youths' lives. Older members might serve a mission together with their spouse, or attend the temple quite frequently. Then there's the green jello at Ward dinners - just had to add that one in. Show more Show less

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

Bruce
It is a law of health that both forbids taking certain substances into our body and encourages general good health practices. Show more Show less

How are modesty and chastity related? How can parents teach their children to be modest in dress, language and behavior?

Bruce
Modesty is the outward representation of our chastity. It also assists others to have more chaste thoughts and keeps us away from bad situations. Parents teach best by example, but should also be active in their children's lives to give them good counsel on how to live, but not be overbearing Show more Show less

What is the Law of Chastity?

Bruce
The law of chastity to me has at its core the respect of both our own bodies and those of others, as well as holding in high esteem the powers for creation of life that God has placed in our bodies. This is an area where Satan tries hard to destroy us, and we need to be on guard against his temptations. Show more Show less

What is the Book of Mormon?

The Book of Mormon is scripture based on the revelations and history of the prophets and peoples of ancient America. It has particular significance to our day, as one of it's main purposes was to come forth in our day to help us with the challenges we face. Show more Show less

Bruce
Abortion is a very serious matter, and except in the case of incest or rape, should not be done. Even in those difficult cases it should only be done after prayerful consideration of the options. Show more Show less

Bruce
Because we care about all of God's children and wish to share our message of hope and truth with others. Show more Show less

How does the Church finance its operations?

Bruce
Some aspects are funded through the tithing of the members. Other aspects are funded through investments, I believe. The church is very careful about how the tithes are spent. Show more Show less

Bruce
Because the scriptures tell us that the work of God is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. I want to believe in what God believes in - you can't go wrong with that! Show more Show less

How can I find someone to talk with, in person, about the Mormon religion?

Bruce

Why don’t women hold the priesthood in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? How do Mormon women lead in the Church?

Bruce
Women hold many positions of responsibility, but the Priesthood is given to men only. You ask why - Well I don't know the full reason, but for some reason God has aligned it with the male role. Much as a woman is given the role of bringing life into the world in a very personal way, men are given the responsibility of directing the affairs of his Church here on the earth, and in proving for the blessings of the Priesthood to others. Women lead by example - this may sound cliche, but this same could be said of Jesus Christ's mortal minstry and the power that that has had on the world. A righteous woman is a powerful leader in the church. Show more Show less

How are the activities of the Mormon missionaries funded?

Bruce
Either the missionary himself saved money, or his family or friends donate money. In cases of very poor missionaries, there is a general missionary fund that can help out. Show more Show less

Bruce
Joseph Smith was called upon by God to re-organize his Church in the latter days of earth's history. But his Church has existed before that time, but wasn't known as the Mormon Church. It is the Church of Jesus Christ, and now includes the added words "of Latter Day Saints" to distinguish it from the earlier incarnation of his Church. Show more Show less

Bruce
We follow the Savior's teaching on baptism in the Mormon Church. A man must be baptized by water and the spirit to enter the Kingdom of God. Show more Show less

How do I become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church)?

Bruce
By learning about the Church, gaining a testimony, and then following the path that Jesus showed us by being baptized. Show more Show less

Why is authority to perform a baptism important?

Bruce
Because God is a God of order, and his ways are not our ways. We can't define what a proper baptism is, only he does that, and a proper baptism is one done by his authority and under the direction of his priesthood. Show more Show less

Why don’t Mormons have paid clergy?

Bruce
We believe that serving others is an important part of being a member of the Church, and that includes serving in positions of responsibility, such as what other churches consider to be clergy. Our compensation for this service is spiritual blessings from our Heavenly Father, not monetary or worldly compensation. Show more Show less

Why is family so important to Mormons?

Bruce
Family is the most basic unit of society, and one which God himself ordained for our learning, growth and edification. It is a gift from God which we should not treat lightly. Show more Show less

Why do you have 12 Apostles? They were just meant to be around for the time of Jesus Christ, not to be replaced with new apostles.

Bruce
When Christ orgainized his Church he chose 12 apostles to help lead the affiars of the Church on the earth. He intended for them to continue, and in fact did so until the effects of apostasy overtook the efforts of the apostles to hold the Church together. Show more Show less

Bruce
The priesthood is the power of God granted to men on earth to do His works among men. Show more Show less

Which of the Savior’s teachings have influenced you in your life?

Bruce
I guess every one that I know of! I love his parables in the bible, and as I learn more about the old testament, I am also impressed how he taught us through the events recorded there. His teachings are also quite clearly presented in the Book of Mormon. I am a better person because of my knowledge of my Savior. Show more Show less

What blessings can we receive through the gift of the Holy Ghost?

Bruce

Mormons believe Jesus Christ is their Savior. Why do we need a Savior?

Bruce
Because no unclean thing can return to live with God. We need to be saved from our sins as well as from a fallen world, and Christ has that power. Our ultimate destiny is to be like God, and to live with him in everlasting happiness and glory. Following Jesus Christ makes that possible. Show more Show less

Who is the Mormon prophet today?

Bruce
As of my writing, the prophet is Thomas S. Monson. He's a good man, and you would do well to learn about what he has written. As the Lord's prophet on the earth, he provides counsel and direction to combat the evils of the day, and to help us get closer to our Father in Heaven. Show more Show less

Our meetinghouses serve the purpose of weekly worship services, and social gatherings, and the like. Show more Show less

Why did your church previously practice plural marriage (polygamy)?

Bruce
Because God commanded it. He has done so throughout the ages, for reasons that are mostly beyond my understanding, but then again, we don't know the mind of God very well and must live by faith in many things. Show more Show less

What is the role of the husband and the wife in the family?

Bruce
The husband and wife each have important roles in creating an optimal family situation. They rely on each other's strengths to assist in raising children, and in strengthening the marriage. The husband presides, but does not dominate. They should act as equal partners, but as I indicated by the word "preside", in God's eyes, he is the first level of accountability in what happens in the family. Show more Show less

What do Mormons believe about the nature of God?

Bruce
God is best characterized as being all about love. He wants us to be happy, and that is His motivation, even though we often do not recognize that that is the case. His love is actually manifest by His justice and mercy, again, sometimes this is hard for us to understand, but we _do_ need to seek out the nature of God, and can then better understand what He wants for us. What is the First Vision?

Bruce
When Joseph Smith offered a prayer to God in a grove of trees, the heavens opened to him in a glorious manifestation of God. This is the event that Mormons refer to as the First Vision. What are some of the ways that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints helps those around the world?

What are some things that tell to you there is a God?

Bruce
The feelings of my heart, mainly. Before I received a testimony of this fact, It would have been my parents, primary teachers, and the scriptures and church leaders which told me so.
