Hi I'm Sam

I'm a designer, a red head, and a Mormon.

About Me

I work for a technology company as a designer and engineer, I go to school part time, and I run a side business. I enjoy music, theater, and writing.

Why I am a Mormon

Like many others, I was born into a Mormon family. I 'grew up' Mormon, following all of the programs of the church. As a teenager, though, I began to have my own spiritual awakening. As if the lights turned on, I suddenly felt the truthfulness of all that I had been taught as a child; that Jesus was my savior and that he calls prophets today just as he did in ancient times. Over the course of my life, I have felt over and over that God is there, that he loves me, and that he needs me to help him serve his children. I've observed throughout my life that the more I put my life into His hands, the more He can direct me to do the best thing for myself, for my family, and for other people.

How I live my faith

I think the most important part of living your faith is trying to become a better person, and become more like Jesus taught in the Bible and Book of Mormon. He taught us to love everyone, even people who hurt us. He taught us to be patient and kind, to give when it is hard to give, and to be willing to give everything we have. I can't say I'm very good at doing everything he taught, but I find that when I try, things tend to come easier in my life and I'm happier.

Are Mormons Christians?

Sam
I consider myself a Christian because I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that salvation comes only through His mercy and grace. I try to live His teachings, and I venerate his atoning sacrifice and resurrection. Show more Show less

Do Mormons worship Joseph Smith?

Sam
No. Joseph Smith was a prophet, kind of like a modern "Moses." He is an important figure in our church, but we don't worship him. We worship God the Father and his son Jesus Christ only. Show more Show less

What are Mormon women like? Do Mormons believe in equality of men and women?

Sam
The women are what make the church really run! They teach classes, run Cub Scout troops, serve missions, plan activities, lead church functions, and give really good advice to the men. Some people are concerned that, because the Priesthood is only given to men in the church, the church is limiting the woman or making her unequal. Really, I see the priesthood as an added charge given to men to love and care for their neighbors as Christ would. Women already do that innately, without any kind of special commission. Behind every good priesthood holder ususally is an even greater woman. Show more Show less

To what do you attribute the growth of the Church?

Sam
The topic of religion isn't as faux paus as people think. I've met a lot of great people who aren't afraid to talk about religion. Our excitement okay, sometimes over-excitement to share our beliefs and other people's willingness to hear and believe what we are telling them are what makes the Church grow. People definitely don't join the church because it's an easy way to live, or because they'll get some kind of worldly benefit or praise. I think people join because they genuinely feel like our message is true that God is our Father in Heaven, that he loves us and wants us to return to Him through acceptance of and obedience to his son Jesus Christ.
