Hi I'm Paul Smart

I grew up in Maryland. I work for Amazon.com. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I just finished my MBA at Dartmouth and I work for Amazon. I've lived in Germany, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and Rome. I eat way too much pizza.

Why I am a Mormon

It's pretty simple really. It works. I'm happier when I live by the teachings of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and unhappier when I don't. That's really all the proof I need! The Savior taught that "by their fruits ye shall know them." I find the fruits of the gospel to be sweeter than anything else in life. It's funny--if I had just seen a great movie or read a great book or eaten at a great restaurant, I would recommend it to my friends and they would probably try it. Why should it be different for something that can bring far more happiness, fulfillment, and peace? My recommendation is to give it a try, run an experiment. Pick a principle of the gospel and live it for a month. See if your life doesn't improve. I know it will.

How I live my faith

I've participated actively in the church my whole life, and I've been asked to hold a variety of positions. I think my favorite position in the church was teaching Sunday School to the teenagers. Currently, I play the piano for our choir. More importantly, the church and my faith help me keep focused on the things that matter most in life -- family, helping others, and my relationship with God. They help motivate me to try to respond to others with more kindness, more patience, more unselfishness, and more humility. I know this has helped me in my marriage, and I hope it will help me be a better father someday too.

What do Mormons believe concerning the doctrine of grace?

Paul Smart
Grace is a power that enables me to do things I'm not strong enough to do otherwise. The power comes through Christ's Atonement -- His suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross. I have weaknesses that I struggle to overcome. I can't overcome them on my own. I have spent years trying to overcome a weakness and it wasn't enough. Finally, I came to realize that I would need to rely on Christ and His Atonement to help give me the strength to be a better man. When I feel weak, I pray and ask for God to strengthen me. Somehow, that has worked when nothing else has. I have had spiritual experiences where I felt God was close to me, helping me and approving of my efforts to be a better person. These experiences are sacred to me. There is a satisfaction that comes from knowing God is pleased with you that you just can't find elsewhere in life. I love the Lord with all my heart.
