Hi I'm Roelof

I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I just finished a two year course in horticulture - greenhouse operations. I'm a father of three girls and and a baby boy born in September 2010. I'm originally from South Africa and live currently in Nova Scotia Canada. I love being outside, I enjoy fishing, camping, canoeing, swimming, gardening and spending time with my family doing all the above. I joined the church in 2006 and was sealed to my family in the Halifax temple a year later. I was called recently as Elders quorum president and I'm excited to serve.

Why I am a Mormon

I worked on cruise ships where I met a girl also working on the ship who was an inactive member of the church. We fell in love and got engaged and married, all in the space of three months. We found our way off ships back to my home country of South Africa where two of our daughters were born. My drinking and smoking habits escalated and were causing a lot of strain on my marraige and family environment. The political situation in SA led us to the decision of leaving for Canada. My wife and kids went first, and I followed nearly a year later due to a long wait for paperwork to be cleared. I knew I had to change my life if I wanted to keep my beloved wife and children. So, landing in Canada, being cut off from my friends in SA, I had the courage to start taking the missionary discussions. I prayed for strength and together with the stop smoking program of the church, I managed to quit 'cold turkey' and never smoked or drank again. I was baptized two weeks later and as I came out of the font, the Holy Spirit showed me that all my sins were trapped in that water; to me it looked like brown muddy water, to everyone else the water was clear. I will never forget that moment of being clean and perfect and how I was born of water and took the name of Christ upon me.

How I live my faith

I have a very important calling in the church. I have to co-ordinate service projects, organize social events and look after the members and families temporal and spiritual needs. I study the scriptures daily, hold family home evening once a week and have family prayer before my children goes to bed. I download and listen to general conference on my I-pod at work.

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

It is a set of guidelines that were given to Joseph Smith by the Lord in regard to what is good for our bodies, such as food. It warns also against harmful substances such tobacco products and "hot drinks", which at the time of revelation were tea and coffee. Show more Show less

Why do Mormons perform baptisms for the dead?

Baptism by immersion is the first ordinance that has to be performed in order to become a member of the church, after showing faith and repentence for our sins. Spirits go to a spirit world after leaving their mortal bodies behind and get taught the gospel. We as latter-day saints give them the chance to accept this and be baptized by proxy a person standing in for baptism. This way Jesus Christ's atonement can give those who have passed on, eternal life in paradise.   Show more Show less

How can I know Mormonism is true?

BY reading the book of Mormon I felt a familiar feeling like unto reading the bible. I felt that the words were inspired writings by Heavenly Father through the prophets. I prayed and received witness from the Holy Ghost that the book of Mormon and the church is true. Show more Show less

What will the Mormon missionaries talk about when they visit my home?

They'll talk about the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and how plain and precious truths have been lost after the death of the original 12 apostles. They will also talk about the plan of salvation. This explains where we came from, our purpose on earth, and life after death. That is just two topics, as you learn more you will be taught more until your mind is enlightened with the truth and your heart is softened by the love of Jesus Christ. Show more Show less
