Hi I'm Alyssa

I grew up in New Mexico. I am a wife and mother of 7 young kids. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

It was only a year after I left my small town home where I grew up to attend a university that I met and fell in love with my husband. We took a leap of faith and got married while we were both still finishing school, but we don't regret it. Just before our two year anniversary when our first child was nine months old, I graduated in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology and my husband graduated a couple years later in Construction Management. More than a decade later we are in another small town raising our big family. Most of my joy comes from watching our seven children grow and develop. It is a simple life, but there is nothing I would rather be doing! I have a love for music, for work, for American Sign Language and most recently for running. Last year I ran my first half marathon while pregnant with our seventh and loved the freedom of running and the accomplishment I felt after going on a long run. I love evenings and weekends, attending my kids’ ball games and completing home projects. On Sundays I refresh myself through church meetings and resting from the busyness of life to focus on spiritual things. Then, I'm ready for the next round of messes, struggles and challenges.

Why I am a Mormon

I am a Mormon because it feels good and right. I grew up going to the Mormon church every Sunday and I had a warm and peaceful feeling. I am a Mormon because I find happiness when I am following the teachings of this church. As I put into practice the doctrines taught in the scriptures, and by living prophets and local church leaders, I have been blessed. I am a Mormon because I find spiritual power through the truths taught in the Book of Mormon. I am a Mormon because I know this church contains the truths and ordinances of our Heavenly Father’s plan of salvation, central to which is Jesus Christ. I am a Mormon because I believe in God as our loving Father who is guiding this work through revelation. I am a Mormon because I want my family to be together through eternity and I know this is possible only through the atonement of Christ and covenants with God. I am and always will be a Mormon because I have experienced the clear and undeniable knowledge that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ did appear to Joseph Smith and gave him the knowledge and authority to again establish the church of Jesus Christ to the earth, just as it had been established when Christ lived on the earth. I know that that our loving Father has given the same authority on the earth today in a prophet, Thomas S. Monson.

How I live my faith

Some of the ways that I live my faith are... Pray daily for God's help, guidance and forgiveness Teach my children to give thanks through prayer before each meal and at the end of each day Read scriptures each night with my family Go to church to renew my covenants with God each week and to have my sins cleansed Go to church to worship God and learn more of Him and His Son Visit other ladies monthly to share a spiritual message with them and help them when in need Attend the temple each month to provide work for those who have died Pay a tithe from every pay check Go without 2 meals each month and donate the money that would have gone towards food to the needy Host activities for 8-9 year old girls twice a month to help them develop faith and other useful skills Be honest in all that I do and say Respect my body by avoiding drugs and alcohol; by getting enough rest and exercise; and by dressisng modestly Set aside Monday nights for family time: we sing, pray, teach and play together Work, create, and cultivate to make my home a better place Try to be patient and kind to follow the perfect example of Jesus Christ (and "try" is obviously the key word:)

To what do you attribute the growth of the Church?

The church has grown so rapidly because it contains truth and is guided by the power of God. Show more Show less

What is the priesthood?

The priesthood is the power of God. It has been given to men on the earth to guide His church and bless His people. It is used to give direction, give special prayers for those who are sick and perform ordinances like baptism and eternal marriages. Show more Show less

What is the Atonement of Jesus Christ? Why was it necessary for Jesus Christ to sacrifice His life?

The atonement of Jesus Christ is the most important event in history. It is when the only perfect being to walk on Earth suffered for our sins and then gave up His life on the cross. It was what allows us to overcome physical death. All will be resurrected, or have their spirits and bodies reunited, never to die again. The atonement also allows us to overcome spiritual death, or our separation from God when we sin. As we repent, we are accepting this sacrifice in order to be reconciled with God, who is both just and merciful. Justice is satisfied as Christ has paid the price that we can never repay (because we continue to sin and dig ourselves in deeper). Mercy has it's hand as well since we can return to live with our Father even though we have transgressed his commandments. Christ was the only one who could save us because He is the only begotten of the Father. He was the only one who had the power to willing give His life. Show more Show less
