Hi I'm Roger Brent

I'm an artist, a father, a husband, and a Mormon.

About Me

I am the only son of a mother and father with six children (I have five sisters). During high school I attended church dances almost every weekend for three years (mostly 80's and 90's pop songs were played). After serving a mission, I attended art college and studied illustration, and now I am a full-time artist / community art educator. I married two years ago, and my first child, a happy baby boy was born this year (2010).

Why I am a Mormon

I come from a long heritage of church members, with ancestors dating back to pioneer days. I grew up in a loving family with a father and mother who care(d) about me. I am a Mormon by the grace of my Savior Jesus Christ, to whom I owe everything that I have and am. Grace is, of course, not always immediate due to stubbornness and imperfections on my part. I have struggled with doubt in the past about God's love for me, in part due to my Scrupulosity disorder (a manifestation of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). With patience and miraculous circumstances, I have gained a loving family of my own, peace in my heart, and faith in God's plan for me. That is why I am a Mormon.

How I live my faith

I love talking with people. My awesome wife points out to me that I'm conversing with complete strangers wherever I go. I think this comes in part from having served a two-year Spanish speaking mission assignment as a volunteer, and also from documentary arts projects that I have done, interviewing hundreds of people on the streets of various cities across the country. I believe that showing kindness and lifting the moods of those around you is a core part of Christianity. I also live my faith by loving my wife and caring for my cute baby :)

Why don’t Mormons have paid clergy?

Roger Brent
Serving as a volunteer often manifests itself as an act of love. Besides avoiding simony, serving in a church calling as a volunteer is an act of faith, trusting that the Lord rewards effort in his own ways by blessing both those who serve and those who are served. Show more Show less

Who wrote the Book of Mormon?

Roger Brent
Mormon, an ancient prophet from the American continent. Although most of what he wrote was simply an abridgement an/or compilation of other prophets' works. The Book of Mormon contains many sermons by ancient American prophets expounding Old Testament scriptures that were brought to the American continent. Mormon was the editor of the Book, compiling numerous ancient sacred documents and Joseph Smith was its modern-day translator by the gift of God. Show more Show less

Do Mormons only help Mormons?

Roger Brent
Of course not! As a volunteer artist in the communities where I have lived, I have been involved in projects benefiting numerous nonprofit organizations, including ministries of other faiths. Many of my closest friends are not Mormons, and I respect, love and help them as children of their Heavenly Father (and often receive generous help, love, and support from them as well).
