Hi I'm Lorin

I'm a father, a musician, a motivational speaker and I've been blind since birth. I'm a Mormon.

About Me

I was born in Australia and am the oldest of 6 children, however at the age of 4, I was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa and have been legally blind my entire life. Despite the enormous challenges of poor eye sight, I successfully completed school and received a college diploma with high distinctions, after which I worked as a remedial therapist for 15 years, treating over 30,000 people from shearers to Olympic athletes. As a young boy, I loved cycling, swimming and spring board diving and began learning the guitar at age 13. Today, I travel Australia and the world as a professional guitarist and motivational speaker and love meeting new people. Recently my brother and I had the amazing experience of creating history, by becoming the first blind persons to ride tandem bicycles over 4000 kilometres across Australia. I am now happily married to my beautiful wife and have 4 wonderful children.

Why I am a Mormon

I consider myself very blessed to have two amazing parents, who loved the Lord and brought me up in a strong Mormon home. Many of the Bible stories they taught me as a child helped me to understand who I was, but more importantly, they helped me to understand who God is. I remember as a boy reading a giant print Bible, then at age 7 began reading The Book Of Mormon for the first time. Despite the extremely large print, I struggled to read one word at a time with a huge magnifying glass. The 529 pages took me 7 years to complete. Reading a book of this size was quite an achievement for a young boy who is almost blind, however the stories and teachings of Jesus Christ contained in this book left an indelible imprint on my heart and mind and left me feeling no doubt what so ever, that The Book Of Mormon is true! During the years that followed, the challenges of blindness drove me many times to my knees in prayer, hoping that God would hear me and help me find peace and purpose in life. My prayers were answered in such a personal way that I found a great sense of inner peace and reassurance. I now trust him with all my heart and soul. It is often said that through small and simple things, great things come to pass - The Lord has certainly proven that to me many times now! Being a Mormon has given me spiritual clarity that can be found no where else. This inspires me to know that any challenge in life can be overcome, as we trust in him and have faith to follow him.

How I live my faith

I’ve often felt that faith is more than just believing and/or verbally confessing that we follow Jesus. Faith is a powerful force that drives us to action. I’ve always strived throughout my life to not just talk about it, but to live it! Blindness has certainly given me a profound outlook and prospective on life. Many times it has kept me humble, but in many other ways I have seen the hand of the Lord perform countless miracles in my life and in the lives of others around me. As I think back on my life’s experiences, my greatest memories and sense of achievement has come when serving other people both within our church, as well as in the community. The example of Jesus Christ has helped me to put the needs of others first, instead of my own. The happiness and gratitude expressed by those whom we serve is priceless! My wife and I also very much enjoy the daily time spent reading the scriptures and praying with our children and consistently see a huge difference in our home, as well as at school and work. There’s a much greater spirit of peace, kindness and overall positive attitude felt by all the family when we spend time with the Lord each day. However my relationship with God is the most important relationship I have; and like all good relationships, it requires time, commitment and much sacrifice. I know that God knows who I am, and he not only hears my prayers, but he answers them as well. For this reason I choose to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, not because I have too, but because I want too!
