What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?
Our body is a precious gift from God. To help keep our bodies and our minds healthy and strong, God gave a law of health to Joseph Smith in 1833. This law is known as the Word of Wisdom (see Doctrine and Covenants 89:1-21).
In addition to emphasizing the benefits of proper eating and physical and spiritual health, God has spoken against the use of:
- Coffee and tea.
- Illegal drugs.
God promises great physical and spiritual blessings to those who follow the Word of Wisdom. Today, the scientific community promotes some of the same principles that a loving God gave to Joseph Smith nearly two centuries ago.
The word of wisdom is the Lord's law of health. We abstain from drugs, tobacco, alcohol, coffee, and tea, and are encouraged to eat wholesome food and grains, and not eat excessive meat. I am asked all of the time by my fellow residents at the hospital why I don't drink coffee, and how I can stay awake all night on call without it. I don't consider it a sacrifice, though, and am as awake and perform as well as any. It is true that the body will be more healthy when following the word of wisdom, the but the main benefit is spiritual. The knowledge that you are in line with the the Lord's teaching is the most important thing. Show more

To me the Word of Wisdom is one of the most beautiful pieces of modern revelation. In it the Lord says, "In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation- Every herb in the season thereof, and every fruit in the season thereof; all these to be used with prudence and thanksgiving. Yea, flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly; And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine. All grain is ordained for the use of man and of beasts, to be the staff of life, not only for man but for the beasts of the field, and the fowls of heaven, and all wild animals that run or creep on the earth; And these hath God made for the use of man only in times of famine and excess hunger." Healthy eating and avoiding certain things like coffee, tea, alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs, etc. Beyond that we are counseled to limit or avoid substances that hinder our freedom. Any addiction limits freedom of choice. We are here in this life to learn to make good choices, and the more we disobey God, the less freedom we have. Our bodies are a gift from God, and we should treat them as such. Show more

Years ago, long before there was much medical research or evidence, the Prophet Joseph Smith revealed guidance that encourages us to avoid alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs while at the same time eating plenty of fruits and vegatables along with some meat. By doing so we have been promised heath and a closer relationship with the Lord. The longer I live, the more I can see the real "wisdom" in the Word of Wisdom. Show more

As Mormons, we abide by a sort of living standard called the Word of Wisdom. The law was given to Joseph Smith in 1833 to help the early saints in the church be strong physically and mentally. In the Word of Wisdom, the importance of healthy eating and living is stressed, and God has instructed the avoidance of alcohol, tobacco, tea, coffee and any illegal drugs. This may seem excessive or unnecessary, but there are reasons to each substance's banning. We are instructed to live lives free from any sort of addiction, including the addiction daily coffee and daily tea bring. For obeying the Word of Wisdom with faith, we are promised many spiritual and physical blessings from God. Show more
