Why Service Has the Potential to Change Us

By Mormon.org

Service is an often-overlooked tool for healing the soul. When we give service to those in need, we find ourselves getting much more in return. In the video below, 50 men were asked to volunteer to serve a neighbor, Kathy, who had multiple sclerosis, by lifting her into her bed each night.

Over the course of seven years, these men learned many valuable lessons about service. Here are three:

1. Service creates new relationships.

As the men visited Kathy each night, she began to ask questions about their families. By sharing stories about their families, they developed deep personal relationships that brought a lot of new value to their lives.

2. Service increases our capacity for compassion.

Just like many of us, the men in this video led busy lives and at first struggled to find the time to help Kathy. However, as they recognized that she was helpless without them, their hearts were softened and they developed greater compassion for her and for others in need.

3. Service heals the soul.

In the Bible, Christ reminds us that “inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). When we perform service for others, we walk in His footsteps and do what He would have done. Through service, we can become more like Him. By doing so, we can find greater peace and joy.

To learn more about the benefits of service, we invite you to meet with the missionaries today to hear their message of hope through Jesus Christ.
