What Mormons Believe about Jesus Christ

By Mormon.org

A Nickname

Do you know a Mormon? How much do you know about their beliefs? Did you know that Mormons belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? “Mormon” is a nickname for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that comes from their belief in the Book of Mormon. Mormons believe in this scripture along with the Bible. The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ is central to the beliefs and culture of Mormons globally. The thirteen Articles of Faith that were written by Joseph Smith—the first Mormon prophet—are a summary of Mormon beliefs. They describe what is believed about the Savior Jesus Christ.

The First Article of Faith

It’s no coincidence that Joseph wrote the following as the first article of the Mormon faith: “We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.” Joseph said the following: “The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things [pertaining to our religion] are only appendages to [these].” The following is a video that shows the current prophet and apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints testifying of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Mormons everywhere echo the sentiments in the above video and seek opportunities to share their love of the Savior. The foundation of the Mormon religion rests upon faith in the three members of the Godhead: Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost, also known as the Comforter.

The Third Article of Faith

The third article of faith states, “We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.”

The knowledge and belief that through the Atonement of Christ we can find forgiveness, solace, and peace provides ongoing comfort for Mormons. It motivates them to share their love of the Savior with others. Because of Jesus Christ, repentance and forgiveness for past mistakes is possible. Because of Jesus Christ, our burdens can be lighter, our futures brighter, and we can experience more joy in our lives.

Mormons believe the gospel of Jesus Christ is transformative. It has the power to change people for the better. Studying the life and example of Jesus Christ and striving to follow in His footsteps can help anyone who is willing to reach out to Him. He patiently waits on us to take action through humble prayer. He said, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20).
