What Does It Take to Become a Member of the Mormon Church?

By Mormon.org

As is the case for many other Christian churches, joining the Mormon Church, formally known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, requires baptism. But before baptism, people can learn about the Mormon Church in many ways. Mormon missionaries are specifically assigned to local areas to teach people about Jesus and His gospel and to simply answer questions. Anyone can also learn more by attending church meetings in Mormon chapels, asking Mormon friends what they believe, and studying scriptures, including the Book of Mormon

Come to Church—Everyone’s Invited!

You don’t have to be a member of the Mormon Church to attend a Mormon worship service. Visitors are always welcome. Mormon church services are led by members of the congregation, not professional ministers. If you know any Mormons, ask them to take you to Sunday worship services, which include partaking of the sacrament (also known as the Communion or the Eucharist) and participating in Sunday School and other church classes. You can also join Mormons in community service activities or ask them to tell you what they do to practice their religion at home.

Learn about Mormon Beliefs

Mormons worship and believe in salvation through Jesus Christ. Mormons follow the teachings of Jesus as found in the Bible; they also believe Jesus shared His teachings with other civilizations as recorded in the Book of Mormon. Mormons believe that family is central to God’s plan for the happiness of His children. They follow 13 core beliefs known as the Articles of Faith.

Meet with the Missionaries

If you want to learn more about what Mormons believe, you can also meet with Mormon missionaries in person or online. They will share brief messages about Mormon beliefs like following Jesus, strengthening your family, and understanding God’s plan for you. They can also answer your questions about the Mormon Church and how to become a member. Meeting with missionaries doesn’t mean you’ve decided to become a member. It’s just a great way to learn more. The missionaries can also attend a worship service with you so you have some friends with you when you go.

Get Baptized

How do you know if you want to get baptized? We call it a testimony—a sure feeling that something is true. When you gain a testimony of Jesus and His gospel, you should follow His example and commandment to be baptized. Jesus was baptized by immersion in the Jordan River by John the Baptist (see Matthew 3:13–17). He taught, “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). You can be baptized by missionaries or even by someone you’ve come to know at church.
