The Scriptures Teach Us How to Pray

The Gift of Prayer

When you were born, you were given a special key and gift—called prayer—to help you throughout your life. Prayer unlocks the blessings of heaven. The scriptures promise that your prayers are heard, and Christ taught that “whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive” (Matthew 21:22).

How Do I Pray?

The scriptures emphasize the importance of prayer. Within them can be found a pattern of prayer and a comfort in the knowledge that anyone can learn to pray. God wants to hear from you, no matter what your situation or your past. He loves you and knows you personally. Christ encouraged all to pray always. We can be sure that God welcomes our prayers anytime, anywhere.

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught us about prayer. He explained that prayer should be a be private matter and shouldn’t be something we do to seek attention from others. He explained that we should “enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.” He also taught that we should avoid prayer that is repetitious. “The Lord looketh on the heart”—He wants us to share with Him what we’re feeling and experiencing. Prayers from the heart are filled with a sincerity that is hard to duplicate with memorized verse.

From Christ’s example in Matthew chapter 6, we learn more about the pattern of prayer. Prayers should begin humbly in Heavenly Father’s name and close in the name of His Son. By beginning your prayers with expressions of gratitude, you open the door to God’s love for you, and your prayers will become more meaningful and personal. You will learn quickly that prayer is a two-way communication.

How Do I Ask God for Help?

God is the perfect parent. Jesus Christ taught us an important fact about our Father in Heaven: “Your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him” (Matthew 6:8). Did you know that Heavenly Father will inspire your prayers if you ask Him to? If we ask for His guidance, He will lead us to pray for what we need most and will also inspire us to pray for others.
