The Refiner’s Fire or Just Fire?

By Mormon.org

Many times, life brings us stress, pain, and heartbreak, and we have no way of escaping it. These times are often referred to as “the refiner’s fire,” times which, while difficult, can build us and mold us into something stronger.

But what about those times when we have a choice to stay in the fire or to extinguish it?

Some examples of these types of fires could be determining to continue through the struggle of starting a new business or a family’s difficulty adjusting after a move. In cases like this, you may believe your struggle is too much to bear. But on the other side of the coin, you may feel the pain of regret if you flee the situation too early. If you are having trouble answering this question for yourself, here are some steps to take to determine how to approach your situation.

Pray

Whenever there is uncertainty in life, the powerful tool of sincere, heartfelt prayer should always be exercised. Your Heavenly Father will know the best approach and will guide you, through His Spirit, as to how you should act.

Speak with close friends and family

Those who have your best interests in mind, such as your closest friends and family, will likely have good insight as to how you should approach things. Speak with them on a personal level, and weigh their feelings or thoughts on the situation, especially those who have dealt with similar situations.

Counsel with Church leaders

You can also seek counsel from your Church leaders along with your friends and family. Church leaders, having been called through inspiration to their position, have powerful insights into situations that are often difficult to understand. Most importantly, they help direct you to the Savior’s teachings for guidance and help.

Utilize the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ

Though this process may take place through a trying time in life, you can always lean on your Savior Jesus Christ for support.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
