The Power of Music

Perhaps you are familiar with the Christmas Eve miracle of 1914 on the war-torn landscape of Flanders Fields, Belgium, during World War I. In an uncharacteristic move between enemy forces, a truce was called and the strains of “Silent Night” echoed between German and British soldiers, reminding the world that music has the power to heal.

And maybe you’ve heard the history behind the well-known hymn “Lead, Kindly Light” by John Henry Newman. Having suffered several hardships throughout his life, Newman was no stranger to struggle. Following a dangerous illness while traveling abroad, Newman penned the comforting lyrics to the beloved hymn while on a boat returning to his native Britain. Watch as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir performs this healing music.

A Force for Good

The wrong kind of music can damage and destroy. President Russell M. Nelson has taught: “Do not allow unworthy, raucous music to enter your life. It is not harmless. It can weaken your defense and allow unworthy thoughts into your mind and pave the way to unworthy acts.” However, music can be a force for good in your life, providing healing and strength, if you are selective about the type of music you choose.

A great way to determine which music you should allow into your life is to gauge whether that music leads you closer to the Master of healing and strength, Jesus Christ. The scriptures teach, “That which is of God inviteth and enticeth to do good continually; wherefore, every thing which inviteth and enticeth to do good, and to love God, and to serve him, is inspired of God” (Moroni 7:13). So if the music you are listening to invites you to do good things, serve God, and seek the influence of Savior in your life, it’s probably a great choice.

Music for All Occasions

Good music is an essential part of worship. The scriptures talk repeatedly about singing praises to God. The Savior Himself, moments before His atoning sacrifice, turned to music. Mark 14:26 states, “And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.” Sacred hymns offer comfort, healing, and strength to those who seek their power.

But good music can be found in other settings as well. Classical music can lift and inspire, but so can contemporary tunes, provided their message is one of hope and light. Listen to this catchy song directed toward teenagers about pressing forward with faith.
