The Godhead: A Quick Overview

By Mormon.org
God and Christ are literally a Father and a Son—separate, distinct, individual beings who are wholly unified in their purpose. Inspirational quote by Robert D. Hales

The first article of faith, one of 13 statements of belief in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, states, “We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.” These three distinct and separate individuals together form the Godhead.

God the Father

God is often referred to as our Heavenly Father because He is literally the Father of our spirits. He has a glorified body of flesh and bone, and we have been created in His image (see Genesis 1:27). We pray to Him for counsel, guidance, and direction in the name of Jesus Christ, and He hears and answers our prayers because He loves us. He is all powerful and all knowing, and He has provided us a plan to return to Him someday.

Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer. He is the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh, and He is central to the Father’s plan for our happiness. Jesus Christ lived a perfect life and died to overcome the effects of our separation from God and physical death. Jesus Christ has a resurrected, glorified body of flesh and bone like His Father. Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we each have the opportunity to return to live with Heavenly Father again someday as we choose to worship and follow Him.

Watch as prophets and apostles share their testimonies of Jesus Christ.

The Holy Ghost

The Holy Ghost, also known as the Holy Spirit, is the third member of the Godhead. He is a personage of Spirit and does not have a physical body. His special mission is to testify of the Father and the Son. He comforts, directs, reveals truth, and helps us become holy as we follow His promptings. He can influence people to make righteous choices. As we learn to feel His influence in our lives, we can know the truth of all things.

Watch as people describe feeling the influence of the Holy Ghost.
