3 Resources to Find Opportunities to Help in Your Community

Why Serve Others?

Thomas S. Monson has said, “To find real happiness, we must seek for it in a focus outside ourselves. No one has learned the meaning of living until he has surrendered his ego to the service of his fellow man. Service to others is akin to duty, the fulfillment of which brings true joy.”

Where to Start

Service opportunities don’t have to be grandiose humanitarian aid projects halfway around the world. Some of the most important chances to serve can be found in your own backyard.

Some of the most important things to consider when looking for opportunities to serve are to be creative in your search and to find something you’re passionate about.

If you have a green thumb, find out if your city’s parks and recreation department has any need for volunteers. If you are passionate about cooking, soup kitchens and food banks could probably use your talents. For animal lovers, consider local pet shelters or reach out to veterinary offices. If you love sports, contact your local recreation center or YMCA and find out if they are in need of volunteer staff or teachers. If you are medically inclined, contact local hospitals, shelters, and assisted living centers. Do you speak a foreign language? Find out if there are any local community college or city-sponsored programs in need of language teachers.

Think outside the box when it comes to serving in your community. Think about your skill sets and what would be the most personally fulfilling for you, and pursue service opportunities in those fields.
