Overcoming Mistakes through the Resurrection of Christ and His Atonement

By Mormon.org

Have you ever done something in your life that you regretted? Have you wished that you could erase that moment from your past? Do you yearn to live without the negativity of that moment hanging over you?

Through the Resurrection of Christ and His Atonement, it is possible for you to overcome any and all of life’s mistakes and live with God again. You can have your slate of regrets wiped clean, have the burdens lifted from your shoulders. Jesus is called the “Savior” because He alone can save you from your mistakes, your sins, and ultimately from death.

What is the Resurrection of Christ?

After Jesus died on the cross, His body was placed in a tomb, and then the tomb was sealed shut. Three days later, as prophets had foretold for centuries, Jesus rose from the dead. His spirit reunited with His physical body. As a resurrected being, He lived again. He lives still. And because of His Resurrection, you will live after death too.

What’s significant about the Atonement of Christ?

The Resurrection of Christ is only part of Jesus’s saving role. His suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane, His public trials, His Crucifixion, and His Resurrection make up a process known as the Atonement.

The Atonement makes it possible for you to be worthy to see God again. Jesus suffered for you and paid the price for your sins. When you put your faith in Him and truly repent, your sins are forgiven. They are blotted out forever. God will not remember them, and you can be clean and pure to live with Him forever.

As Paul taught in the New Testament, “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9).

Through your faith in Christ and in His atoning actions, your sins are forgiven. Without faith and without Jesus’s great sacrifice for you, forgiveness of your sins wouldn’t be possible.

How does the Resurrection and the Atonement of Christ help you?

The New Testament explains that Jesus’s blood was “shed . . . for the remission of sins” (Matthew 26:28).

If Christ had not overcome death through the Resurrection or completed any of the other sacrifices to atone for the sins of the world, you would not be able to cleanse your soul from sin and live with God after this life. But because Jesus completed the work He was sent to do, you have the ability to repent (a term that means seeking God’s forgiveness) and become spiritually clean before God. As Isaiah wrote, “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” (Isaiah 1:18).

How do you repent?

Repentance is a process that involves acknowledging your mistakes, having faith in Jesus and the power of His Atonement, and feeling sorrow for the sins you committed. Most important, you commit to abandoning that sin so you don’t keep making the same mistakes. But don’t get discouraged if you make the same mistake more than once. This is where the real power of the Atonement lies. Because of Jesus’s sacrifice, you can repent as often as you need to until you have overcome every mistake.

Exercising faith in the resurrected Christ and recognizing His Atonement is key to overcoming the pitfalls of mortality. Without this, you would not have the ability to be forgiven of your mistakes. You would have no hope of living with God after this life. God does want you to live with Him again, and resurrection is part of God’s plan to help you return to His presence and live an eternal life full of happiness.
