Mary, The Mother of Jesus—an Example of True Discipleship

By Mormon.org

Imagine the thoughts and feelings Mary, the mother of Jesus, must have experienced at the moment an angel of the Lord appeared to her, declaring her mission and great responsibility in becoming the mother of the Savior of the World. Mingled with joy and rejoicing, she may have felt scared and overwhelmed at the magnitude of the task before her. Yet her response provides an example of true discipleship for us to follow in our lives.

Faith in God’s Purposes

In Luke 1, the angel’s charge seemed unlikely to Mary, and she questioned, “How shall this be?” (verse 34). But as the angel assured her that “with God nothing shall be impossible” (verse 37), Mary responded with faith. She didn’t have all the answers to the unknown before her, but she trusted that God did. Sometimes, when we face seemingly impossible trials or responsibilities, our natural instinct might be to doubt the Lord’s purposes or our own abilities. But following Mary’s example, we too can respond in faith, going forward and trusting in God’s plan.

Meekness Not Weakness

Said Mary, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38). Relying on faith, Mary meekly submitted to the will of the Lord. In today’s world, any form of submission appears weak. But meekness is not weakness; rather, it is controlled spiritual strength. With Mary’s words, she chose to yield her gifts and abilities to the Lord’s purposes. We can also show meekness by yielding our personal agendas to the Lord’s will. As we do, we will find that the plan He has for us is far greater than the one we have imagined for ourselves.

Share What We Know

To Elisabeth, Mary’s cousin, Mary shared her certain knowledge of the divinity of Jesus Christ, His mercy and strength, and His ability to save mankind. Listen to one rendition of this joyful witness, known throughout the world as the Magnificat, performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

We can follow this example by sharing what we know of Him with others. We never know when our words will be the answer to someone’s silent prayer. And as we share what we know, our own knowledge is strengthened and we become better followers of Jesus Christ.
