Make Ice Cream, Make Memories

Desmond Tutu once said, “You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.”

With the long days and warm nights of summer, this season is full of opportunities to better appreciate the gift of family and grow closer together. And what better opportunity is there than the mouthwatering magic of making your own ice cream?

Here’s how to do it, no machine required:

  • 1/2 cup half-and-half
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 sandwich Ziploc bag
  • 1 gallon Ziploc bag
  • 3 cups crushed ice
  • 1/3 cup rock salt
  1. Put the half-and-half, sugar, and vanilla in the sandwich bag and seal it closed.
  2. Put the ice and rock salt in the gallon bag. Add the sealed, filled sandwich bag. Seal the gallon bag.
  3. Squeeze the bag until cream is thickened, about 10–15 minutes. For smaller, more sensitive fingers, wrap the gallon bag in a towel or use gloves to keep them from getting too cold.
  4. Remove the sandwich bag, unseal, and enjoy. And the best part—you don’t even have to wash any bowls!

You can also add fresh fruit or chocolate for added yum.

And while you’re mixing and dishing it up, get to know a different side of your loved ones. Ask everyone to share their favorite summer memory, whether it was last week or decades ago. Find out why it was so special and how you can have more moments like that. You may be surprised by the tender feelings you can share together.
