Religious Freedom: The Why and How to Find Religious Answers

By Mormon.org
A woman seeks for the truth through scripture reading and prayer.

Why

There are many beliefs and religions in the world today. They all have teachings to make one better, but yet they are all so different. How can you know which is the right one? Why is there so much confusion on the matter?

Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ teach only the truth. Their truths are taught through prophets called of God and are found in written accounts called scripture. Pure truth is taught in the scriptures, but errors are in the ways that they are taught and interpreted. How do you find the right answers to religious confusion?

When Jesus Christ was on the earth, He taught His gospel. He and His chosen Apostles had the authority. After Christ was rejected and crucified, His authority remained with His Apostles. His Apostles were persecuted and taken from the earth, which caused the authority to act in the name of God to be lost. God returned His authority to the earth through the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

How can you know if this is true?

How

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5).

1. Develop Faith in Jesus Christ

Having faith in Jesus Christ means believing His teachings and His words. As you develop faith in Jesus Christ, you will gain the strength to follow what He asks you to do. You can know Him personally through studying His life and teachings in the scriptures. Elder Dallin H. Oaks, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, said:

“The scriptures teach us that faith comes by hearing the word of God (see Rom. 10:17). That word, which comes to us by scripture, by prophetic teaching, and by personal revelation, teaches us that we are children of God, the Eternal Father. It teaches us about the identity and mission of Jesus Christ, his Only Begotten Son, our Savior and Redeemer. Founded on our knowledge of those things, faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is a conviction and trust that God knows us and loves us and will hear our prayers and answer them with what is best for us” (“Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,” April 1994 general conference).

Not only will faith in Jesus Christ enrich your life but it will help bring you to an understanding of His will for you. As you gain strength and faith through the Savior Jesus Christ, you will know where to find His truth.

2. Receive Answers from the Right Places

We are not left alone to find true answers; true divine help is available to everyone who sincerely desires it. The words of Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and Their chosen prophets are found in the scriptures. These include the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, and other important books of scripture. Search, read, and personally ponder the teachings of the scriptures to find answers that Christ has already given. An Apostle of Jesus Christ, Richard G Scott, said:

“Scriptures are like packets of light that illuminate our minds and give place to guidance and inspiration from on high. They can become the key to open the channel to communion with our Father in Heaven and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ” (“The Power of Scripture,” October 2011 general conference).

Receive more understanding by visiting with missionaries and attending church services. In these environments you have the ability to ask questions and learn doctrines taught by others.

3. Ask Him Personally

Faith and study will help you understand true teachings. Through prayer you can communicate directly with Heavenly Father in a very personal way. Through sincere prayers, you can ask Him personally what is true and what His will is for you. At the end of the Book of Mormon, the prophet Moroni gives an invitation to all:

“And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

“And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things” (Moroni 10:4–5).

4. Act on Your Answer

Prayers are answered in Heavenly Father’s time and in His way, but they are answered. He will communicate with you through the Holy Ghost, which will give you feelings in your heart of the truth. Many times the answers come though feelings. Such feelings are love, joy, peace, goodness, and faith (see Galatians 5:22–23). Once you receive an answer, follow it. Trust and believe that Heavenly Father will provide you with an answer. Because He loves you, if you sincerely ask Him, you will receive the truth through Him.
